IEC 62333-3:2010 provides characterization of parameters for electromagnetic noise suppression sheet (NSS) for digital devices and equipment used in a frequency range between 30 MHz to 30 GHz. Guidance is given for uniform presentation of the properties of noise suppression sheet, intended for use in manufacturers and users technical data. NSS suppresses noise at its source, rather than absorbing noise at a distance. Therefore NSS is distinguished from RF wave absorbers used in free space. This standard addresses the following purposes of NSS manufacturers and users: - it assists users in understanding the published technical data in catalogues; - it guides users in selecting the most preferable NSS for each application; - it establishes measurement benchmarking for manufacturers of performance in new development of NSS; and - it maintains high reliability of NSS and applied products. The numerical values given in this standard are typical values of parameters (properties) of the related NSS. The purpose of NSS testing is the benchmarking of materials. Predictions of specific device performance values are not always easy or even possible. Every detailed material and NSS specification should be agreed between the user and the manufacturer.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62333-3:2010 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on the characterization of parameters for electromagnetic noise suppression sheets (NSS) used in digital devices and equipment. This standard applies to NSS operating within a wide frequency range from 30 MHz to 30 GHz. It complements the IEC 62333 series by providing detailed guidance for manufacturers and users on the technical properties and performance benchmark testing of noise suppression sheets.
The key objective of IEC 62333-3:2010 is to support consistent and reliable measurement and presentation of NSS properties. It ensures that noise suppression sheets effectively reduce electromagnetic noise at the source, distinguishing these materials from RF wave absorbers designed for free-space noise reduction.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose IEC 62333-3 outlines parameters for characterizing noise suppression sheets used in digital devices, assisting users in understanding technical data and guiding manufacturers in developing high-quality NSS products. It supports uniform benchmarking for material properties and physical structure.
-
Material Properties Important parameters include:
- Surface resistivity measured in ohms per square, indicating electrical resistance on the NSS surface, determined according to IEC 60093.
- Mechanical characteristics such as density, Young’s modulus, and hardness, which influence durability and mechanical integrity. Density is measured per ISO 1183-1 standards.
- Thermal properties including thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficients, critical for performance under varying temperature conditions.
- Environmental conditions encompassing operating temperature range, storage temperature, and flammability ratings to ensure reliability in diverse application environments.
-
Structural Parameters
- Thickness of the noise suppression sheet, affecting noise attenuation and physical integration.
- Layer structure detailing the composition and arrangement of layers within the NSS, which impacts electromagnetic characteristics.
-
Measurement Methods The standard specifies methods to uniformly measure each parameter, providing clear instructions for material testing and data reporting. These methodologies foster comparability and reliability across different NSS manufacturers and users.
-
Limitations Numerical values offered are typical reference values used for benchmarking rather than definitive performance guarantees. Specific device performance predictions should be jointly agreed upon between the user and manufacturer.
Applications
IEC 62333-3:2010 is essential for:
- Manufacturers of noise suppression sheets developing new NSS materials or improving existing designs. The standard provides benchmark criteria enabling consistent characterization and quality control.
- Design engineers and end-users who need to select optimal NSS materials for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in digital devices, ensuring reliable noise suppression without compromising device operation.
- Quality assurance teams requiring standardized measurement protocols for verifying NSS properties before installation or integration.
- Product developers in electronics and communication equipment sectors aiming to maintain high performance and reliability by incorporating tested and standardized noise suppression solutions.
Typical industries benefiting from this standard include telecommunications, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, and industrial digital systems requiring effective EMC mitigation.
