IEC 62343-1:2019 provides general conditions for the standard performance of optical dynamic modules. All performance standards of dynamic modules are based on the general conditions defined in this document. Additional conditions are included in individual performance standards. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 2016, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) errors of Table 1 has been corrected; b) the contents of Table A.1 has been revised. Keywords: standard performance of optical dynamic modules
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62343-1:2019 establishes general conditions for the performance standards of optical dynamic modules. This international standard, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), serves as the foundational reference for all performance standards concerning dynamic optical modules used in fiber optic systems. The standard defines minimum requirements and operating conditions that ensure consistent evaluation and verification of module performance. The second edition, released in 2019 with amendments in 2023, includes critical corrections and updates, enhancing the technical accuracy and applicability of the general conditions.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Defines the baseline conditions for testing the standard performance of optical dynamic modules. It acts as a reference for all related performance standards.
- Operating Conditions: Specifies required environmental and operational parameters such as temperature range (−5 °C to 70 °C), relative humidity (5% to 85%), vibration frequency, shock, and maximum input power parameters to ensure reliable module function.
- Wavelength Range Requirements: Defines applicable operational spectral bands aligned with ITU-T Recommendation G.Supplement 39. These bands range from O-band (1260–1360 nm) to U-band (1625–1675 nm).
- Storage Conditions: Presents typical environmental factors for storage, such as temperature range (−40 °C to 70 °C), humidity limits, and mechanical stress limits due to shock and vibration.
- Absolute Maximum Ratings: Lists the recommended maximum electrical and optical ratings to prevent damage, including applied voltage, current, electrical power, and optical input power.
- Technical Corrections: The latest edition addresses errors in operating conditions (Table 1) and revisions to storage conditions in Annex A.1.
Applications
IEC 62343-1:2019 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and testers of optical dynamic modules utilized in:
- Fiber optic transmission systems deployed in telecommunications central offices and data centers.
- Modules requiring rigorous performance validation under defined operating environments before market release.
- Dynamic optical components such as chromatic dispersion compensators and gain tilt equalizers, where consistent quality and performance assurance are critical.
- Development of new standards and specifications within the IEC 62343 series, ensuring compatibility and standardization across products.
- Certification and quality assurance processes to verify that dynamic modules meet international performance benchmarks.
By adhering to this standard, industry professionals can ensure optical dynamic modules perform reliably under standardized environmental and operational conditions, facilitating interoperability and market acceptance.
