IEC 62505-1:2016 is applicable to single-pole and two-pole alternating current (AC) circuit-breakers which are designed for indoor or outdoor fixed installations in tractions systems, and operated with an AC line voltage and frequency as specified in IEC 60850:2014. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are as follows: - reflect the latest versions of standards referenced and remove text already included in the IEC 62271 series; - extend the scope to include single-pole and two-pole circuit-breakers; - rework Table 1 according to the changes of IEC 62497-1:2010. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 62271-1:2007, and IEC 62271-100:2008.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62505-1:2016 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies particular requirements for alternating current (AC) circuit-breakers with nominal voltages above 1 kV, specifically for railway fixed installations. This standard applies to both single-pole and two-pole AC circuit-breakers designed for indoor or outdoor use in traction systems. It harmonizes the technical requirements to ensure safety, reliability, and interoperability within railway electrical switchgear applications.
The standard is intended to be used together with IEC 62271-1:2007 and IEC 62271-100:2008, providing a comprehensive framework for the design, testing, and operation of AC circuit-breakers used in railway fixed installations, particularly those subject to AC line voltages and frequencies as outlined in IEC 60850:2014.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability IEC 62505-1:2016 covers circuit-breakers rated for nominal voltages above 1 kV and is applicable to both single-pole and two-pole devices for railway traction systems. It addresses equipment intended for fixed installation and operation at specified AC voltages and frequencies.
-
Technical Ratings and Parameters The standard defines essential electrical ratings including nominal voltage, rated voltage, insulation levels, rated frequency, and short-circuit breaking capacity. It emphasizes transient recovery voltage (TRV) standards and conditions for switching operations such as short-circuit making and breaking currents, rated operating sequences, and capacitive switching currents.
-
Design and Construction Requirements It specifies provisions for the design, including mechanical endurance, nameplate markings, creepage distances, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). These elements ensure long-term reliability and compliance with safety regulations.
-
Testing Procedures Detailed type tests and routine tests are delineated covering dielectric strength, mechanical and environmental conditions, short-circuit making and breaking, out-of-phase testing, and capacitive switching. Tests ensure devices meet performance and safety criteria under normal and fault conditions.
-
Environmental and Safety Considerations The standard addresses transport, storage, installation, operation, maintenance, and environmental impacts to guarantee safe service life and minimal environmental footprint.
Applications
IEC 62505-1:2016 is crucial for manufacturers, designers, and operators of railway electric traction systems who require certified AC circuit-breakers capable of managing voltages above 1 kV. Key practical applications include:
- Fixed installation in railway power supply systems for traction vehicles
- Circuit protection and fault isolation in overhead contact lines and substations
- Ensuring compatibility and interoperability between railway switchgear components
- Meeting international safety and performance standards for railway fixed electrical installations
- Supporting maintenance and operational reliability through standardized testing protocols
This standard supports the electrification and modernization of rail networks, promoting safer, more efficient railway infrastructure.
