IEC 62642-2-2:2010 is for passive infrared detectors installed in buildings and provides for security grades 1 to 4 (see IEC 62642-1), specific or non-specific wired or wire-free detectors, and uses environmental classes I to IV (see IEC 62599-1). A detector shall fulfil all the requirements of the specified grade.
Abstract
Overview - IEC 62642-2-2:2010 (SIST IEC 62642-2-2:2024)
IEC 62642-2-2 specifies requirements and test methods for passive infrared (PIR) intrusion detectors used in alarm systems installed in buildings. It defines functional, operational, electrical, environmental and tamper-security requirements and assigns detectors to security grades 1–4 (see IEC 62642-1) and environmental classes I–IV (see IEC 62599-1). The standard requires a detector to meet all criteria of its declared grade.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers the full product lifecycle from design claims to performance verification. Major technical topics include:
- Detection performance - requirements for sensitivity, indication of detection and significant reduction of range.
- Event processing - how detectors generate signals/messages depending on grade and event type.
- Operational behavior - switch-on delay, minimum time interval between intrusion signals, self-test functionality.
- Immunity to incorrect operation - resistance to false alarms from air flow, visible/near-infrared radiation and other environmental disturbances.
- Tamper security - detection of removal, unauthorised access, re-orientation and magnetic interference; masking detection and immunity tests.
- Electrical requirements - current consumption, input voltage range, ripple and response to power loss.
- Environmental classification and testing - assessment according to environmental classes I–IV and associated test procedures.
- Testing and verification - basic detection tests, walk tests (including high-velocity, intermittent and close‑in detection), endurance, and detailed test matrices and annexes (test magnets, target definitions, walk test diagrams).
Practical applications and who uses this standard
IEC 62642-2-2 is used to ensure reliable PIR detector performance in intrusion and hold-up alarm systems for buildings. Typical users include:
- Detector manufacturers - to design and certify PIR products to a declared security grade.
- System integrators and installers - to select detectors appropriate for a site’s grade and environmental class.
- Specifiers and consultants - to write performance-based procurement specifications for commercial, residential and institutional security.
- Certification bodies and test labs - to perform standardized detection, tamper and environmental tests.
- Facility and security managers - to evaluate suitability of detectors for specific installation conditions.
