Abstract
Overview
IEC 62769-1:2023 - Field Device Integration (FDI®) Part 1: Overview provides the conceptual foundation for the FDI family of standards used in industrial automation. This third edition (Edition 3.0, 2023) describes the motivation, concepts and architecture of FDI technology and explains how to read and use the other parts of the multi-part IEC 62769 series. It is intended as the primary entry point for stakeholders who need to understand FDI package structure, deployment models, and lifecycle considerations.
Key topics and technical content
IEC 62769-1:2023 covers high-level requirements and concepts (not protocol-level implementation) including:
- Background and motivation for FDI and how it relates to existing device description approaches (EDDL, FDT) and OPC UA.
- Architecture overview: FDI Packages, FDI Client, FDI Server, FDI Communication Server, and user-interface tiering.
- Deployment models for engineering, operator and maintenance stations, handheld tools, and third‑party tools.
- FDI Host and host variants: host facets, entities and their roles in integration scenarios.
- Life‑cycle and versioning: identification mechanisms, version levels (major/minor/revision), FDI Technology Version and forward compatibility considerations.
- Security, redundancy and operational considerations relevant to deploying FDI systems.
- Normative references to related standards such as IEC 61804 (EDDL), IEC 62453 (FDT), and IEC 62541 (OPC UA).
Significant changes in this edition are summarized, including references to FDI Technology Mapping parts (e.g., Part 6-100/.NET and 6-200/HTML5) and the addition of Part 8 (FDI OPC UA Server facet).
Practical applications - who uses this standard
IEC 62769-1 is useful to:
- Device manufacturers creating FDI Packages and defining device interfaces.
- Automation system vendors and software developers who implement FDI Clients, Servers or Communication Servers.
- System integrators and control engineers planning deployment, versioning and lifecycle management for field devices.
- Plant operators and maintenance teams seeking a vendor-agnostic approach to device configuration, diagnostics and asset management.
- Certification bodies and testers assessing conformity to the FDI framework.
Benefits include improved interoperability, reduced engineering effort, clearer lifecycle/version management and alignment with OPC UA and existing device description technologies (EDDL, FDT).
