IEC 63044-5-2:2017 is a product family standard that sets the minimum level of EMC performance for the HBES/BACS network in addition to the product EMC standards for HBES/BACS devices. It also applies to devices used within an HBES/BACS network for which no specific HBES/BACS product EMC standard exists. In addition, it defines EMC requirements for the interface of equipment intended to be connected to an HBES/BACS network. It does not apply to interfaces to other networks. NOTE An example of other networks is a dedicated ICT network covered by CISPR 22 and 23. This document specifies EMC requirements for HBES/BACS to be installed in residential, commercial and light-industrial environments, according to the definition given in IEC 61000-6-1. This document is applicable (but not limited) to operator stations and other human–system interface devices, devices for management functions, control devices, automation stations and application-specific controllers, field devices and their interfaces, cabling and interconnection of devices, used within a dedicated HBES/BACS network. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 63044-5-1:2017.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63044-5-2:2017 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for Home and Building Electronic Systems (HBES) and Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS). This part of the IEC 63044 series focuses specifically on EMC requirements for HBES/BACS devices and networks that are intended for use in residential, commercial, and light-industrial environments.
The standard sets the minimum immunity and emission performance levels for devices within HBES/BACS networks, covering devices without dedicated EMC product standards and interfaces connected to HBES/BACS systems. It provides guidance on maintaining system reliability and minimizing electromagnetic interference in small to medium-scale building automation contexts.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability IEC 63044-5-2 targets EMC requirements for HBES/BACS installations in environments defined by IEC 61000-6-1, including homes, office buildings, shops, and light industrial sites. It supports a broad range of networked equipment, such as operator stations, control devices, field devices, and their interfaces.
-
Immunity Requirements The standard defines detailed immunity criteria for different parts of HBES/BACS devices:
- Enclosures (housing the equipment)
- HBES/BACS network ports
- Signal ports
- DC power ports
- AC power ports Testing against common EMC disturbances like electrostatic discharge, radiated radio-frequency electromagnetic fields, electrical fast transient bursts, surge, and power frequency magnetic fields is mandated to ensure device robustness.
-
Emission Requirements IEC 63044-5-2 also specifies the maximum allowable electromagnetic emissions to reduce the risk of interference affecting other equipment and systems within the environment.
-
Testing and Performance Criteria In conjunction with IEC 63044-5-1, the document outlines standard test conditions, performance criteria, and test methodologies that manufacturers should follow to verify EMC compliance.
Applications
IEC 63044-5-2 is critical for manufacturers, system integrators, and building managers involved in:
-
Home Automation Systems Ensuring smart lighting, HVAC control, security, and energy management solutions comply with EMC standards to deliver reliable operation in residential environments.
-
Commercial Building Automation Providing EMC-tested control systems for offices, retail spaces, and public buildings where multiple electronic systems coexist.
-
Light Industrial Automation Supporting automation systems in light-industrial zones where electromagnetic environments can vary but strict immunity and emission limits are necessary for operational integrity.
-
Networked Devices and Interfaces Covering devices connected within HBES/BACS networks that may not yet have dedicated EMC standards, promoting system-wide electromagnetic compatibility.
Compliance with IEC 63044-5-2 helps reduce failures and downtime caused by electromagnetic disturbances, enhances user safety, and supports regulatory approval processes in global markets.
