IEC TS 62196-4:2022(E) is applicable to plugs, socket-outlets, vehicle connectors and vehicle inlets, herein referred to as “accessories”, of standardized configuration for DC power supply of electric road vehicles, where the protection against electric shocks relies on double or reinforced insulation between all AC and DC inputs and outputs of the EV supply equipment, intended for use in conductive power supply systems which can incorporate control means, with a maximum operating voltage up to 120 V DC, not exceeding 60 A.
Abstract
Overview - IEC TS 62196-4:2022 (DC pin & contact‑tube accessories)
IEC TS 62196-4:2022 is a Technical Specification from IEC that defines dimensional compatibility and interchangeability requirements for dedicated DC pin and contact‑tube accessories (plugs, socket‑outlets, vehicle connectors and vehicle inlets) used for conductive charging of electric vehicles. It applies to Class II or Class III applications where protection against electric shock relies on double or reinforced insulation, for systems up to 120 V DC and maximum 60 A. The accessories are intended for use with copper (or copper‑alloy) conductors and in ambient temperatures from −30 °C to +50 °C.
Key topics and technical requirements
The specification supplements IEC 62196‑1 and covers mechanical, electrical and performance aspects including:
- Dimensional compatibility and interchangeability of DC pins and contact tubes to ensure mating across manufacturers
- Rated voltages and currents (see table overviews in the TS) and limits: up to 120 V DC / 60 A
- Connection requirements between the EV and power supply (including cable and terminal provisions)
- Classification, marking and identification of accessories for safe use and maintenance
- Protection against electric shock based on Class II/Class III insulation principles
- Interlocks, terminals and protective earthing provisions where applicable
- Mechanical requirements: temperature rise, mechanical strength, driveover, corrosion resistance and materials ageing
- Electrical safety tests: insulation resistance, dielectric strength, breaking capacity and conditional short‑circuit withstand
- Environmental and EMC considerations, and compatibility with control/communication means (e.g., CANopen references)
Note: the TS is part of the IEC 62196 series and is intended to be read with IEC 62196‑1. A patent claim related to some standard sheets is declared in the document.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
This TS is essential for:
- Connector and cable assembly manufacturers designing DC EV charging hardware for Class II/III systems
- EVSE designers and OEMs ensuring mechanical/electrical interchangeability across suppliers
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing compliance and safety testing
- Fleet operators, charging network providers and infrastructure planners specifying interoperable DC accessories
- Regulators and standards committees harmonizing national/regional requirements
