IEC TS 62257-9-5:2018 applies to stand-alone renewable energy products. This document deals essentially with off-grid renewable energy products with batteries and solar modules with DC system voltages not exceeding 35 V and peak power ratings not exceeding 350 W. The tests contained herein are capable in many cases of adequately assessing systems at higher voltages and/or power ratings. This new edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - replaced the term "stand-alone lighting kits" with "stand-alone renewable energy products" throughout the document (including the title) to reflect that the revised document is applicable to a broader range of products with a more diverse set of capabilities. - added test methods for flooded lead-acid batteries. - significantly revised the protection tests, assessment of DC ports, appliance tests, and energy service calculations based on field experience. - revised the voltage operating points at which testing is carried out to better reflect actual operation and to simplify the procedures for testing products without lights. - revised the energy service calculations to include the effect of multiple simultaneously connected loads on the port voltage and battery-to-port efficiency and to accommodate products with grid or electromechanical charging.
Abstract
Overview
IEC TS 62257-9-5:2018 is an IEC Technical Specification that defines laboratory evaluation methods for stand‑alone renewable energy products used in rural electrification. Edition 4.0 (2018) covers off‑grid products combining batteries and solar modules with DC system voltages up to 35 V and peak power ratings up to 350 W (tests may also be applicable to higher voltages/power). The document provides test procedures, sampling rules and reporting formats to evaluate performance, durability, safety and energy‑service delivery of small off‑grid systems.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and terminology: replaces “stand‑alone lighting kits” with the broader term stand‑alone renewable energy products, reflecting expanded capabilities.
- Battery testing: adds specific test methods for flooded lead‑acid batteries and addresses battery performance and longevity.
- Protection and electrical tests: revised protection tests, assessment of DC ports, appliance compatibility tests, and electrical characteristic measurements.
- Energy service calculations: updated to include effects of multiple simultaneously connected loads, port voltage behavior and battery‑to‑port efficiency, and to handle products with grid or electromechanical charging.
- Voltage operating points: simplified and revised to better reflect real operating conditions and to ease testing of products without integrated lighting.
- Quality assurance & sampling: structured product specification templates, quality test methods, market check, initial screening, accelerated verification, and pay‑as‑you‑go (PAYG) testing procedures.
- Annexes and test setup: detailed normative annexes for manufacturer self‑reporting, sampling, visual screening, sample preparation and power supply setup for photometric/lumen tests.
Applications
- Developing laboratory test plans and test reports for small off‑grid solar systems.
- Defining procurement specifications and acceptance criteria for NGOs, government rural electrification programs and donors.
- Supporting product quality assurance, certification pilots and aftermarket verification (market checks).
- Guiding manufacturers on design verification and PAYG providers on evaluation of systems used in pay‑per‑use deployments.
- Informing technical due diligence in product selection for microgrids, solar home systems and productive‑use appliances.
Who would use this standard
- Test laboratories and certification bodies
- Manufacturers and component suppliers (batteries, solar modules, DC appliances)
- Procurement agencies, aid organizations and microfinance/PAYG companies
- Rural electrification project engineers and technical evaluators
Related standards (high level)
While IEC TS 62257‑9‑5 focuses on lab evaluation for small off‑grid products, users often consult related IEC/ISO standards on battery testing, photovoltaic module testing, safety and appliance performance for comprehensive compliance and product specification development.
