IEC TS 62607-4-6:2018(E) provides a method for determination of carbon content of nano electrode materials by infrared absorption spectroscopy method. The method is applicable to carbon contents of mass fraction between 0,001 % and 100 %. This method will enable customers to: a) decide whether or not a nano electrode material is usable, and b) select a nano electrode material with suitable carbon content for its application. This document includes: - recommendations for sample preparation, - outlines of the experimental procedures used to measure electrode nanomaterial properties, - methods of interpretation of results and discussion of data analysis, and - case studies.
Abstract
Overview
IEC TS 62607-4-6:2018 is a Technical Specification from the IEC 62607 series that defines a standardized method to determine carbon content in nano-enabled electrode materials using an infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy method. The procedure applies to mass fractions of carbon from 0.001 % to 100 %, and is intended to support consistent measurement, data interpretation and inter-laboratory comparison for materials used in nano-enabled electrical energy storage (e.g., battery and supercapacitor electrodes).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Measurement principle: Infrared absorption spectroscopy for carbon quantification (high-frequency IR carbon/sulfur analyzer referenced).
- Applicability range: Carbon mass fraction between 0.001 % and 100 %.
- Sample preparation: Recommendations include controlled drying and tableting of nano powders to reduce measurement artifacts and prevent loss of material during thermal treatment.
- Apparatus and materials: Typical equipment includes an analytical balance, powder compressor, high-frequency IR carbon/sulfur analyzer, muffle furnace and crucibles; use of certified reference materials and specified analysis/carrier gases is described.
- Test workflow: Procedures cover start-up, blank verification, calibration/checking, analysis, reporting of results and data verification to ensure traceability and repeatability.
- Data analysis and interpretation: Guidance on result interpretation, consistency checks and discussion of measurement uncertainty; case studies illustrate typical workflows and inter-laboratory comparison results.
- Risk considerations: Addresses particular challenges with nano powders (e.g., material loss or contamination in furnace gas flows) and provides mitigation measures.
Practical applications
- Material selection: Helps R&D and formulation teams decide whether a nano electrode material is usable and select materials with appropriate carbon content for conductivity and performance targets.
- Quality control: Enables QA/QC for nanomaterial suppliers and battery manufacturers to verify carbon loading in electrode powders and composites.
- Research and development: Provides a repeatable method for academic and industrial labs comparing cathode nanomaterial recipes and studying carbon’s impact on electrochemical performance.
- Inter-laboratory comparability: Standardized procedures and case studies facilitate consistent comparisons across laboratories and studies.
