This document specifies requirements for 8-strand braided ropes, for 12-strand braided ropes, and for covered rope constructions (single braid, double braid and multi-core construction) for general purpose made of high modulus polyethylene (HMPE), and gives rules for their designation. Many different types and grades of HMPE fibre exist which are commonly used to produce rope products. This document does not apply to all variations in strength or product performance.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10325:2026 specifies the requirements and designation system for fibre ropes made from high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) including 8-strand braided ropes, 12-strand braided ropes, and various covered rope constructions such as single braid, double braid, and multi-core designs. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard provides a unified framework for manufacturers, users, and industry professionals to ensure consistency, quality, and safety in the production and use of HMPE ropes for general purpose applications. It covers designation methods, material properties, construction guidelines, and marking requirements, but does not encompass all potential strength variations or product performance differences.
Key Topics
-
Rope Types and Construction:
- 8-strand braided rope (type L)
- 12-strand braided rope (type T)
- Covered ropes (type K), including single and multiple core types
-
Material Specifications:
- Use of filament HMPE fibres in core construction
- Variety of cover materials possible (e.g., polyester, polyolefins, polypropylene, HMPE)
- Importance of overlay finishes and coatings for abrasion resistance and friction adjustment
-
Designation and Identification:
- Standard method for rope designation includes fibre type, number of strands, reference number (rope diameter), cover materials, and stabilization type
- Optional use of coloured yarns and printed marker tapes for manufacturer identification
-
Physical Properties:
- Indicative values for linear density and minimum breaking strength for various rope sizes and constructions
- Variations in performance can result from coating application, cover material, and type of core
-
General Requirements:
- Labelling, packaging, and invoicing guidelines
- Conformity to ISO 9554 for braid pitch and construction details
- Preservation of safety margins for general-purpose use
Applications
ISO 10325:2026 applies to a wide range of industries and use-cases where high strength, low weight, and excellent abrasion resistance are required. Typical applications for HMPE fibre ropes standardized under this document include:
- Maritime and Offshore: Mooring, towing, and anchoring due to high strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to saltwater and abrasion
- Industrial and Construction: Lifting, rigging, and load-securing operations where durable and lightweight ropes are essential for safety and efficiency
- Recreational and Sports: Climbing, sailing, and rescue operations benefiting from HMPE rope’s reliability under stress
- Utility Services: Use in winches, pulleys, and cable replacement in utilities, telecommunications, and energy sectors
Users are advised to consult manufacturers regarding the appropriate rope design for their specific application, particularly concerning breaking strength, expected loads, and environmental factors.
