Abstract
Overview
ISO 1042:1998 - "Laboratory glassware - One-mark volumetric flasks" specifies an internationally accepted series of one‑mark volumetric flasks for general laboratory use. Published as the fourth edition (1998), it updates earlier editions by adding new capacities (including 1, 2, 20 and 5 000 ml), permitting conical and wider‑neck shapes, tightening material definitions and introducing a capacity test method. The standard defines capacity, reference temperature, classes of accuracy, essential dimensions and marking requirements for narrow‑ and wide‑neck volumetric flasks.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Capacities covered: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 200, 250, 500, 1 000, 2 000 and 5 000 ml.
- Classes of accuracy: Class A (higher grade) and Class B (lower grade). Wide‑neck variants are designated AW / BW.
- Reference temperature: Standard reference is 20 °C (27 °C may be substituted where adopted nationally).
- Material: Glass must meet hydrolytic class not lower than HGB3 per ISO 719 and have a coefficient of thermal expansion ≤ 3.3 × 10−6 K−1 (includes borosilicate glass 3.3).
- Dimensions & tolerances: Essential internal neck diameters, graduation‑line distances and overall dimensions are specified (see tables for narrow‑ and wide‑neck values). Graduation line thickness ≤ 0.4 mm.
- Shape & stability: Body may be pear‑shaped or conical; flasks ≥ 25 ml must not topple on a 15° incline (10° for
