Overview
ISO 10524-3:2019 - Pressure regulators for use with medical gases - Part 3: Pressure regulators integrated with cylinder valves (VIPRs) - specifies design, type-testing and marking requirements for cylinder valves with integrated pressure regulators (VIPRs) used in the administration of medical gases. The standard covers VIPRs mounted on refillable cylinders with working pressures up to 30 000 kPa (300 bar), intended for gases such as oxygen, medical air and oxygen/nitrous oxide mixtures, and for gases used to drive surgical tools. VIPRs under this standard are pressure pre-set and provide a pressure outlet and/or pre-set flow outlet(s).
Key technical topics and requirements
- Design and construction - general design rules, materials, cleanliness, lubrication and construction requirements for safe, reliable VIPRs.
- Safety and usability - ergonomic, marking and labeling requirements to support safe medical use.
- Outlet requirements - limits and test methods for pressure outlets and pre-set flow outlets including stability and accuracy for fixed orifices.
- Mechanical strength and durability - tests for resistance to pressure, impact/drop, endurance of pressure regulators, flow selectors and filling-port components.
- Leakage and pressure-relief - mandatory leakage tests and requirements for pressure-relief devices to reduce hazard risk.
- Resistance to ignition - requirements and tests to minimize ignition risk with medical gases.
- Filling port and non-return valves - construction and endurance tests to ensure safe cylinder filling and backflow prevention.
- Integrated electronics - requirements when VIPRs include electronic devices (monitoring/control).
- Testing and marking - detailed non-gas-specific and gas-specific test methods, plus durability of markings and color coding.
Practical applications and intended users
ISO 10524-3 is intended to guide and regulate the development, production and verification of VIPRs used in:
- Medical gas cylinder manufacturers and OEMs designing VIPRs.
- Test laboratories performing type tests, mechanical/flow/ignition tests and certification.
- Healthcare facility procurement and biomedical engineering teams selecting compliant VIPRs for clinical, surgical and homecare applications.
- Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies assessing compliance for devices mounted on refillable cylinders up to 300 bar.
- Cylinder filling facilities and homecare system designers that specify VIPRs fitted to refillable or self-filling cylinders.
Related standards
- Other parts of the ISO 10524 series and related medical gas equipment standards address complementary requirements (design, testing and system interfaces) and should be consulted alongside ISO 10524-3 when specifying or certifying medical gas regulators.
