Specifies a method for determining the frost resistance of all ceramic tiles intended for use in freezing conditions in the presence of water.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10545-12:1995 specifies a laboratory test method to determine the frost resistance of ceramic tiles intended for use where freezing and thawing occur in the presence of water. The standard defines how to prepare test specimens, impregnate them with water, subject them to controlled freeze–thaw cycles, measure water absorption, and record visual damage. This test helps ensure tiles will resist damage from freeze–thaw exposure in service.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to all ceramic tiles intended for use in freezing conditions with water exposure.
- Sample size: Minimum total area of 0.25 m² and at least 10 whole tiles, free from relevant defects (cracks, crazing, holes, nipped edges/corners) unless marked and reported.
- Apparatus: Includes a drying oven (110 ±5 °C), a precision balance (≈0.01% accuracy), vacuum impregnation tank and pump, freezer capable of controlled air flow around tiles, thermocouple or equivalent temperature sensor, and chamois leather for surface drying.
- Preparation: Tiles are dried to constant mass (mass change
