Overview
ISO 11850:2011 - Machinery for forestry - General safety requirements - is a type‑C ISO standard that sets general safety requirements for self‑propelled forestry machines and machines configured as forestry machines. It covers common hazards, hazardous situations and events for machine types such as fellers, bunchers, delimbers, forwarders, log loaders, skidders, processors, harvesters, mulchers and multi‑function versions when used as intended or under reasonably foreseeable misuse. The standard complements ISO 12100 risk‑reduction principles but does not replace machine‑specific standards or cover every hazard for every attachment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Operator protection: requirements for operator station space, FOPS (falling‑object protective structures) tested to ISO 8083 energy levels, ROPS (roll‑over protective structures) per ISO 8082 series, and OPS (operator protective structures) per ISO 8084.
- Load bunk and headboard strength: log‑transport machines must provide a headboard that resists a 35 000 N perpendicular force (test plate dimensions and maximum permanent deformation are specified).
- Guards, shields and safety distances: guards and thermal shields follow ISO 3457; safety distances align with ISO 13857.
- Controls, visibility and operator ergonomics: layout requirements to ensure controls are reachable and operator space complies with ISO 3411 and related ergonomics standards.
- Systems and hazards: braking, steering, hydraulic systems, winches, stability, electromagnetic compatibility, fire risks, noise and vibration are addressed with pointers to test and measurement standards.
- Information and marking: operator’s manual content, machine marking and safety signs requirements are specified to support safe operation and maintenance.
- Verification: conformity is normally verified by inspection, measurement or referenced tests.
Note: ISO 11850 excludes certain specific hazards (e.g., some attachment‑specific risks, lifting operations, remote control operation, road safety, and some vibration/noise test setups). For saw‑chain and glazing protection it references ISO 11837 and ISO 11839.
Applications and users
ISO 11850:2011 is used by:
- Manufacturers and designers of forestry machines to design compliant, safe machines.
- Safety and compliance engineers to perform conformity assessment and risk reduction.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies executing referenced tests (FOPS, ROPS, headboard strength).
- Fleet buyers and procurement teams to set safety requirements in specifications.
- Regulatory authorities referencing harmonized safety requirements.
