Overview
ISO 1271:1983 specifies a laboratory method for determining the carbonyl value of essential oils using the free hydroxylamine method. The procedure converts carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones, especially ketones other than methylketones) to oximes by liberating free hydroxylamine from a mixture of hydroxylammonium chloride and potassium hydroxide (KOH). Excess alkali is back-titrated with hydrochloric acid (HCl), either colorimetrically or potentiometrically, to quantify carbonyl content. Results are reported as milligrams of KOH per gram of essential oil (mg KOH/g).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Intended for essential oils containing carbonyl compounds that are difficult to convert to oximes by the ISO 1279 method.
- Not applicable to oils with substantial amounts of esters or other alkali‑sensitive constituents.
- Principle
- Carbonyls → oximes via free hydroxylamine; measure alkali consumed by titration of excess KOH.
- Reagents
- Standard analytical-grade reagents: HCl solution (0.5 mol/L), KOH in ethanol (0.5 mol/L), hydroxylammonium chloride solution, bromophenol blue indicator, and ethanol/distilled water.
- Apparatus
- Typical laboratory glassware (pipettes, burettes, flasks), analytical balance, potentiometer with combined glass electrodes (for potentiometric titration), and magnetic stirrer.
- Procedure essentials
- Prepare sample and reagents per ISO 356 and ISO 212 guidance.
- React sample with hydroxylammonium chloride/KOH mixture, allow to stand or reflux as specified for the particular essential oil.
- Perform blank determination and titrate excess alkali to endpoint (colorimetric or potentiometric).
- Use the blank-corrected titration volume to calculate carbonyl value; express results with two significant figures.
- Special cases
- Annex provides a modified operational procedure for strongly colored essential oils when potentiometric titration is unavailable.
Applications and users
- Practical for quality control, specification testing, and research on essential oils where carbonyl content affects aroma, stability, or regulatory compliance.
- Primary users:
- Analytical chemists in fragrance, flavor, and aromatherapy industries
- Quality assurance laboratories testing essential oil batches
- Standardization bodies and method validation teams
