Abstract
Overview
ISO 12713:1998 - Non‑destructive testing - Acoustic emission inspection - Primary calibration of transducers specifies a method for the absolute (primary) calibration of acoustic-emission (AE) transducers. The standard defines how to determine a transducer’s frequency response to surface elastic waves typically encountered in AE work, producing calibration units expressed as output voltage per unit free motion (e.g., volts per metre). Calibration data are produced at discrete frequency intervals (approximately 10 kHz) up to 1 MHz.
This method combines elasticity‑theory calculations (infinite half‑space approximation) with a laboratory implementation using a large metal transfer block and a step‑force source (glass capillary break) and requires comparison with an absolute capacitive standard transducer.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & objective: Establish uniform AE transducer calibration to enable data correlation between labs and over time. Applicable to secondary standard transducers and AE application sensors.
- Calibration input: Mechanical step‑force approximated by breaking a glass capillary (typical capillary ≈ 0.2 mm, step force ≈ 10–30 N, rise time ≈ 0.1 ms).
- Transfer block: Large, defect‑free metal block (steel commonly used). Must pass ultrasonic inspection (e.g., ASTM E 114) and have uniform wave speeds (tested per ASTM E 494).
- Standard transducer: High‑fidelity capacitive device (Breckenridge & Greenspan design) used to measure absolute surface displacement; characteristics include low dynamic loading, high sensitivity and calculable response.
- Geometry & mounting: Standard and test transducers placed on the same surface, equidistant from source (typically ~0.1 m) to ensure identical surface displacement history.
- Frequency response: Determined from comparison of test transducer output with standard transducer or theoretical surface displacement; calibration units are volts per unit free motion.
- Material effects: Calibration curves depend on block material (Rayleigh wave speed and mechanical impedance); block choice significantly affects sensitivity magnitude and spectral features (e.g., aperture nulls at J0(ka) zeros).
Applications and users
- Calibration laboratories performing AE sensor characterization for research, industrial NDT, structural health monitoring and quality assurance.
- Manufacturers of AE transducers seeking a primary calibration route for transfer standards.
- NDT engineers and technicians needing traceable, reproducible AE sensitivity/phase data for quantitative acoustic emission inspection and inter‑laboratory data correlation.
