Overview
ISO 13533:2001 - "Petroleum and natural gas industries - Drilling and production equipment - Drill-through equipment" - specifies requirements for the design, performance, materials, testing, inspection, welding, marking, handling, storing and shipping of drill-through equipment used in oil and gas drilling. The standard defines service conditions (pressure, temperature, wellbore fluids) for which equipment is to be designed and applies to components such as ram and annular blowout preventers (BOPs), ram blocks and top seals, annular packing units, hydraulic connectors, drilling spools, adapters, loose connections and clamps. ISO 13533 is intended to ensure safe, functionally interchangeable drill-through equipment for surface and subsea drilling assemblies. It does not cover field use or field testing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Design requirements: size designation, service-condition definitions, equipment-specific design methods and verification testing, and documentation (clauses on design and verification).
- Materials: written material specifications, requirements for pressure-containing members and compatibility with wellbore fluids.
- Welding: weldment design, welding controls, procedure and performance qualifications, plus repair/remanufacture guidance (normative annexes).
- Testing & inspection: requirements for operational characteristic tests, non-destructive testing, hardness and tensile testing, and design temperature verification for non-metallic seals.
- Quality control: inspection plans, measuring and testing equipment, personnel qualification and record keeping.
- Marking, handling & logistics: product identification (Product Description Code), stamping, storage for periods >30 days, and shipping instructions.
- Annexes: normative Annex A (heat-treating equipment qualification) and Annex B (repair/remanufacture); informative annexes cover test procedures, purchasing guidelines and failure reporting.
Practical applications and users
ISO 13533 is used by:
- Manufacturers and OEMs of BOPs, annular units, hydraulic connectors, and drilling spools to design and certify equipment.
- Purchasing and procurement teams to specify compliant drill-through components and acceptance criteria.
- Quality, inspection and NDT personnel for production testing, marking and documentation.
- Design and mechanical engineers responsible for pressure-containing components and material selection.
- Operators and rig contractors for selecting interoperable drilling equipment (note: the standard does not govern field testing procedures).
