ISO 14040:2006

Overview

ISO 14040:2006 - "Environmental management - Life cycle assessment - Principles and framework" defines the conceptual framework and core principles for conducting life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle inventory (LCI) studies. It sets out the four LCA phases (goal and scope, life cycle inventory, life cycle impact assessment, and interpretation), requirements for reporting and critical review, limits and relationships between phases, and conditions for value choices and optional elements. ISO 14040:2006 describes what an LCA should cover but does not prescribe specific calculation methodologies.
