ISO 1413:2016 specifies the minimum requirements for shock-resistant wrist watches and describes the corresponding test method. It is based on the simulation of the shock received by a wrist watch while falling from a height of 1 m onto a horizontal wooden floor (an equivalent surface is described in B.1.1).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1413:2016 - Horology - Shock‑resistant wrist watches defines minimum requirements and a standardized test method to verify the shock resistance of wrist watches. The tests simulate shocks equivalent to a watch falling from a height of 1 m onto a horizontal wooden floor (or an equivalent surface). This third edition updates the procedure to include three specified shocks on the watch head and two free‑fall shocks on the complete watch (including bracelet).
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope: Establishes pass/fail criteria and test procedures for shock‑resistant wrist watches; intended for homologation testing rather than 100% production inspection.
- Shock simulation:
- Three head shocks (applied with a shock test apparatus/sabot) and two free‑fall shocks (1 m drop onto an impact plate).
- Shock characteristics and verification are specified in Annex A.
- Test apparatus & materials: Sabot and impact plate must be made of the same material; examples and dimensions are provided in Annexes B (head shocks) and C (free‑fall).
- Test conditions: Ambient temperature 18 °C–25 °C; water‑resistant watches must retain water resistance after head shocks (see ISO 22810).
- Pre‑test settings:
- Mechanical watches: rate determined after full winding (position FH, 6H, 9H) using instantaneous rate measurement.
- Quartz watches: operate for ≥2 h before testing; rate checked in CH or FH.
- Functions set to non‑engaged/reset positions (calendar, chronograph, crowns, LCD segments).
- Acceptance criteria:
- Example: maximum admissible displacement of hands after the first shock (hands must remain within tolerances; LCD/electronic displays must retain all segments).
- Post‑shock rate checks and functional verifications are required (detailed procedures for quartz and mechanical watches are given).
- Documentation: Flow charts, shock descriptions and consequences, and normative verification steps are included in Annexes D and E.
Practical Applications and Users
ISO 1413:2016 is used by:
- Watch manufacturers and component suppliers - to design and validate shock‑resistant movements and cases.
- Quality control and test laboratories - to perform standardized shock and free‑fall testing for product qualification and compliance.
- Certification and conformity bodies - to establish homologation criteria for branded watches.
- Designers and R&D teams - to evaluate impact performance early in development.
- Retailers and importers - to verify claims such as “shock‑resistant” or to compare models.
