Overview
ISO 14457:2017 - "Dentistry - Handpieces and motors" specifies safety, performance and testing requirements for dental handpieces and motors that have patient contact. The standard applies to straight and angle handpieces, high-speed air turbine handpieces, air motors, electrical motors and prophy handpieces, and also sets requirements for manufacturer information, marking and packaging. It explicitly excludes intraoral camera handpieces, powered polymerization handpieces, air- or electrical-powered scalers, powder-jet handpieces and multifunction (syringe) handpieces. (See Annex A of the standard for clarification of covered types.)

Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 14457:2017 covers both product requirements and test methods, including:
- Materials and surface requirements to ensure biocompatibility and cleanability.
- Mechanical robustness tests such as drop testing, chuck/shank retention (extraction and torque), and dimensions of head/nose.
- Power supply and connections: requirements for electrical, air and water supplies and connection interfaces for consistent performance.
- Performance metrics: speed, stall torque, eccentricity, output power (notably for high‑speed air turbines).
- Cooling, air/water pressure and spray systems: test procedures for motor and handpiece cooling and spray air/water delivery.
- Temperature control: limits and tests for temperature rise of housings and excessive temperature that could harm patients or operators.
- Acoustics and vibrations: noise level and vibration performance testing.
- Resistance to reprocessing: durability of handpieces to cleaning, disinfection and sterilization cycles.
- Ingress and leakage: water-tightness and prevention of internal contamination.
- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and usability, marking, packaging and manufacturer information.
The standard includes detailed test apparatus descriptions and procedures, sampling guidance and normative definitions.
Practical applications and users
ISO 14457 is essential for:
- Manufacturers and product designers of dental handpieces and motors to design compliant products and prepare technical files.
- Testing and certification laboratories performing performance, safety and sterilization-resistance testing.
- Regulatory and quality teams ensuring conformity for market access and post-market surveillance.
- Procurement and clinical engineering teams in dental clinics and hospitals assessing supplier compliance and device safety.
- Notified bodies/registries evaluating device documentation for approvals.
