Overview
ISO 15630-1:2019 - "Steel for the reinforcement and prestressing of concrete - Test methods - Part 1: Reinforcing bars, rods and wire" is the ISO test-methods standard for verifying the chemical, mechanical and geometric characteristics of steel used as reinforcement in concrete. This third edition (2019) updates and replaces the 2010 edition. The standard defines test pieces, equipment and procedures for laboratory verification of reinforcing bars, rods and wire. Note: sampling conditions are excluded (these are specified in product standards), and Annex A provides a list of options for agreement between parties.
Key Topics
The standard specifies practical test methods and measurements used in quality control and compliance testing, including:
- Tensile test at room temperature - defined test pieces, equipment and procedure for tensile strength and elongation.
- Bend test and rebend test - methods for assessing ductility and bending performance, including equipment and interpretation of results.
- Axial force fatigue test - fatigue testing under cyclic axial loading to assess endurance.
- Chemical analysis - procedures for determining steel composition to verify conformity with product requirements.
- Measurement of geometrical characteristics - procedures to measure rib and indentation geometry: transverse rib height, longitudinal rib height, rib spacing, pitch, rib angles, and un-ribbed circumference.
- Relative rib/indentation area (fR, fP) - methods and formulae for calculating rib or indentation area as a percentage of bar surface.
- Deviation from nominal mass per metre - procedures to determine mass accuracy.
- Specialized tests (Clause 13) - additional procedures such as tensile tests at elevated or low temperature and cyclic inelastic load tests.
- Test report - required contents for clear, auditable reporting of results.
- Annex A (informative) - options for agreement between supplier, purchaser and laboratory.
Applications
ISO 15630-1:2019 is used for:
- Quality control and factory testing of reinforcing steel (bars, rods, wire)
- Specifying acceptance testing in procurement contracts and product standards
- Laboratory accreditation and verification of test methods
- R&D and material characterization for construction projects
- Forensic analysis of reinforcement failures and field investigations
Typical users: steel manufacturers, independent testing laboratories, civil and structural engineers, construction contractors, procurement/specification writers, and standards organizations.
Related Standards
- ISO 15630 is a multi-part series; Part 1 addresses reinforcing bars, rods and wire. Other parts of the series cover prestressing steels and related test methods (see ISO catalogue for details).
- Product standards for reinforcing steel specify sampling conditions and acceptance criteria that complement ISO 15630‑1 test methods.
