1.1 This International Standard specifies the requirements for seal-less rotodynamic pumps that are driven with permanent magnet coupling (magnet drive pumps) or with canned motor, and which are mainly used in chemical processes, water treatment and petrochemical industries. Their use can be dictated by space, noise, environment or safety regulations. Seal-less pumps are pumps where an inner rotor is completely contained in a pressure vessel holding the pumped fluid. The pressure vessel or primary containment device is sealed by static seals such as gaskets or O-rings. 1.2 Pumps will normally conform to recognized standard specifications (e.g. ISO 5199, explosion protection, electromagnetic compatibility), except where special requirements are specified herein. 1.3 This International Standard includes design features concerned with installation, maintenance and operational safety of the pumps, and defines those items to be agreed upon between the purchaser and manufacturer/supplier. 1.4 Where conformity to this International Standard has been requested and calls for a specific design feature, alternative designs may be offered providing that they satisfy the intent of this International Standard and they are described in detail. Pumps which do not conform with all requirements of this International Standard may also be offered providing that the deviations are fully identified and described. Whenever documents include contradictory requirements, they should be applied in the following sequence of priority: a) purchase order (or inquiry, if no order placed), see annexes D and E; b) data sheet (see annex A) or technical sheet or specification; c) this International Standard; d) other standards.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 15783:2002 - Seal-less rotodynamic pumps - Class II - Specification defines requirements for seal-less rotodynamic pumps driven by permanent magnet couplings (magnetic drive pumps) or canned motors. The standard covers pumps where the inner rotor is fully contained within a pressure vessel (primary containment) sealed by static seals (gaskets or O‑rings). It focuses on safe, maintainable designs for use in chemical processes, water treatment and petrochemical industries, and for installations driven by space, noise, environmental or safety constraints. ISO 15783:2002 is the Class II specification (less stringent than Class I) and sets out items to be agreed between purchaser and supplier.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Design requirements for hydraulic end and power drive end, including impeller, shafts, bearings, wear rings and running clearance.
- Drive types: permanent magnet coupling (MDP) and canned motor pump (CMP) arrangements (close‑coupled and separately coupled).
- Containment and gaps: terminology and dimensional considerations for air/liquid/magnetic gaps and total gap.
- Mechanical integrity: critical speed, balancing, vibration limits, external forces on flanges and nozzle design.
- Materials and repairs: guidance on material selection, composition and acceptable repair practices (informative annexes list commonly accepted materials).
- Testing and inspection: material tests, hydraulic performance and acceptance testing procedures.
- Installation & operation: circulation/flush requirements for lubrication and cooling, direction of rotation, monitoring, nameplates and baseplate considerations.
- Documentation & purchaser requirements: normative data sheet (Annex A), checklists (Annex G), enquiry/purchase documentation and post‑order documentation (Annexes C, D).
Practical Applications and Users
ISO 15783 is used by:
- Pump manufacturers and designers for developing compliant magnetic drive and canned motor pumps.
- Process and mechanical engineers specifying seal‑less pumps for hazardous, corrosive or environmentally sensitive fluids.
- Procurement and safety teams ensuring clear purchase data sheets and documented deviations.
- Maintenance and test engineers for acceptance testing, installation checks and operational safety procedures.
Typical applications include pumping hazardous chemicals, solvent circulation, corrosive liquids, and any situation where leak prevention, low noise or compact installation is required.
