This document specifies requirements for indicator lights to show the status of freight-container-handling spreaders and grappler arms. It is applicable to: a) container-handling spreaders with twistlocks for handling unladen and/or laden freight containers; b) grappler (bottom lift) arms for handling semi-trailers and swap bodies; when fitted to: — counterbalance lift trucks, with masts, as defined in ISO 5053‑1:2015, 3.3; — rough terrain trucks, with masts, as defined in ISO 5053‑1:2015, 3.7; — non-stacking low-lift straddle carriers, as defined in ISO 5053‑1:2015, 3.18; — stacking high-lift straddle carriers, as defined in ISO 5053‑1:2015, 3.19; — variable-reach trucks, as defined in ISO 5053‑1:2015, 3.20; — rough-terrain variable-reach trucks, as defined in ISO 5053‑1:2015, 3.21; — variable-reach container handlers, "reach stackers", as defined in ISO 5053‑1:2015, 3.23; — counterbalance container handlers, as defined in ISO 5053‑1:2015, 3.24.

Overview
ISO 15871:2019 defines specifications for indicator lights used to show the status of freight-container-handling spreaders (with twistlocks) and grappler (bottom‑lift) arms fitted to a range of industrial trucks. It applies when these attachments are mounted on equipment such as counterbalance lift trucks, rough‑terrain trucks, straddle carriers, variable‑reach trucks, reach stackers and counterbalance container handlers. The standard helps ensure clear, unambiguous visual signals to the operator for safer container and semi‑trailer handling.

- On spreader or grappler arms: minimum area of 1 200 mm; filament lamps min. 20 W, or other light sources (e.g., LED) min. 20 cd.
- At the operator’s position: minimum area of 200 mm; filament lamps min. 2 W, or LED min. 2 cd.
- Flashing frequency: If used, flash rate must be 120–180 flashes per minute.
- Optional indicators: Flashing red for intermediate states and additional rear‑arm indicators can be fitted by agreement.
