Overview
ISO 16039:2004 - published by ISO and prepared by ISO/TC 195 - defines terminology and the commercial specification content for mobile, self‑propelled slipform pavers. The standard covers machines that place, compact, mould and finish cement concrete in a plastic state using an extrusion (slipforming) process. It specifies general machine configuration and optional equipment depending on the application (roadways, road‑safety structures, drainage elements and airport paving). Excluded are machines with non‑travelling formwork fixed to the ground and works requiring only vertical progression.

Key topics
- Definitions and terminology: clear terms for slipform paver components (mould, mounted vs floating mould, concrete‑mix distributor, vibrator, final finisher, reinforcement guide, dowel‑bar inserter, tie‑bar inserter, slope controller).
- Operating principle: use of concrete’s plastic behaviour under vibration and extrusion to produce shaped elements.
- Machine description / basic unit:
- concrete distribution device (auger, conveyor, diverter plough)
- vibration/compaction system (internal vibrators; hydraulic or high‑frequency electric)
- mould and side forms for shaping pavement, barriers, gutters, etc.
- sensor control systems for alignment and grade (stringline, electronic/hydraulic sensors)
- operator console and power unit (engine)
- Adjustable parameters: vibrator position and frequency, concrete supply rate, guiding‑system sensitivity to meet smoothness and profile requirements.
- Commercial specification content: required characteristics in vendor literature, including main assemblies, working widths and heights, layer thickness, working/travel speed, number and type of crawlers, dimensional and transport data, operating/transport mass, engine data (manufacturer, type, power, displacement, speed), fluid capacities, electrical system, and optional additional equipment.

Applications and users
Practical applications include:
- Concrete roadways and street paving
- Road‑safety structures (barriers, parapets, walls)
- Road drainage elements (curbs, gutters, edgings)
- Airport paving (runways, taxiways, aprons)
Primary users:
- Equipment manufacturers and OEMs specifying slipform paver designs
- Contractors and civil works specifiers preparing procurement documents
- Fleet managers and maintenance teams assessing machine capabilities
- Standards bodies and test laboratories comparing commercial literature against standardized content
