ISO 16987:2003 specifies a test method for the determination of the moisture resistance of wood-based panels under cyclic test conditions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16987:2003 defines a standardized test method to determine the moisture resistance of wood-based panels under cyclic test conditions. The method subjects test pieces to three repeated cycles of immersion, freezing and elevated-temperature drying, followed by reconditioning and measurement of dimensional change and residual strength. ISO 16987 is intended for use by test laboratories, manufacturers and specification authorities to assess how wood-based panels behave under repeated wetting and freezing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Three cycles of immersion → freezing → drying, then reconditioning and measurement of swelling and strength.
- Cycle parameters (as specified):
- Immersion: fresh water pH (7 ± 1) at (20 ± 1) °C for (70 ± 1) h; samples standing on an edge, upper edge covered by (25 ± 5) mm of water.
- Freezing: temperature between −12 °C and −25 °C for (24 ± 1) h.
- Drying: laboratory cabinet at (70 ± 2) °C with specified air exchange (≈5 ±5 per hour) for (70 ± 1) h.
- Cooling between cycles: room at (20 ± 5) °C for (4 ± 0.5) h.
- Apparatus requirements: water bath, freezing cabinet capable of rapid temperature recovery, forced‑air drying cabinet with controlled ventilation.
- Specimen preparation & conditioning:
- Measurements after cyclic treatment:
- Reporting: lab identification, sampling report, panel type and thickness, relevant product spec, surface treatment, apparatus used, test results (per Clause 7) and deviations.
Applications and users
ISO 16987 is used for:
- Quality control and product development by wood-panel manufacturers (plywood, MDF, particleboard).
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies for durability claims.
- Material specifiers, architects and engineers who need verified moisture-performance data for applications exposed to cyclic wetting/freezing.
- R&D teams evaluating treatments, adhesives or board constructions for improved moisture resistance.
Keywords: ISO 16987, moisture resistance, wood-based panels, cyclic test, swelling in thickness, tensile strength, bending strength, quality control.
