The method is applicable to all machine-made textile floor coverings. It forms an integral part of other methods of test for textile floor coverings, and the result of this test by itself cannot be used as an indication of the quality of the product. - Replaces the first edition /ISO 1765-1975) clauses 5 and 8 and sub-clauses 7.2 and 9.4 of which have been technically revised.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1765:1986 is an internationally recognized standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a method for determining the thickness of machine-made textile floor coverings. This standard applies broadly to all types of machine-made textile floor coverings and is intended for use as part of a broader testing framework. While the thickness measurement alone does not indicate the overall quality of the floor covering, ISO 1765 provides a precise and repeatable measurement method essential for quality control, research, and development purposes within the textile flooring industry.
Originally issued in 1975, this 1986 edition supersedes specific clauses of the earlier version, introducing technical revisions to improve accuracy and reliability. The standard specifically addresses the measurement conditions, specimen preparation, and apparatus requirements, ensuring consistent results across laboratories and manufacturers.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability This method applies to all machine-made textile floor coverings, including those with yarn pile or flocked pile, as well as pile-free types. Different thickness areas within a single floor covering should be measured separately.
-
Measurement Principle Thickness is defined as the distance between a reference base plate and a circular presser foot applying a standardized pressure of 2.0 kPa, measured with an accuracy of 0.1 mm.
-
Specimen Preparation and Conditioning Specimens are conditioned in standardized atmospheres as defined by ISO 139 to ensure reproducibility. Preparation includes brushing the pile surface and selecting representative samples away from distorted areas.
-
Apparatus Requirements The measurement device must have a circular presser foot with an area between 300 and 1000 mm², exerting a uniform pressure normal to the specimen surface. A circular guard ring and straightedge are also specified for measurements on pile-free coverings.
-
Test Procedure After zeroing the gauge, the specimen is placed use-surface up, and thickness readings are taken after applying the presser foot. Multiple measurements are done to obtain an arithmetic mean, with separate results for different thickness levels.
-
Reporting Results The test report should confirm adherence to ISO 1765, describe the conditioning atmosphere, list individual measures, and provide the average thickness to the nearest 0.1 mm.
Applications
-
Quality Control in Manufacturing Manufacturers of textile floor coverings use ISO 1765 to monitor product consistency and ensure thickness specifications meet design criteria.
-
Product Development and R&D Thickness measurement helps in comparing material formulations and construction techniques, assisting in product innovation and optimization.
-
Compliance and Standardization This method supports compliance with other standards and regulations that specify thickness criteria for performance or safety reasons.
-
Lab Testing and Certification Accredited testing laboratories apply ISO 1765 to generate reproducible data for certification, marketing, or client assurance.
-
Comparative Market Assessments Traders and purchasers use thickness data measured according to ISO 1765 for objective product comparison.
