ISO 17899:2004 specifies requirements for marine electric window wipers. It covers the required features, performance, constructional materials and electrical equipment for wiper systems for sea-going vessels where bridge duty is regularly maintained. It covers the performance, materials and electrical equipment for wipers required to meet the needs of ISO 8468 where such wipers are specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 17899:2004 - Ships and marine technology: marine electric window wipers - specifies performance, construction, materials and electrical requirements for heavy-duty wiper systems used on sea‑going vessels where bridge duty is regularly maintained. The standard covers complete wiper systems (drive, control, arms and blades) for common types - straight‑line, pendulum and pantograph - and allows motors mounted either inside or outside the bridge. ISO 17899 sets benchmarks for wipe performance, durability, environmental resistance and safety that manufacturers, shipbuilders and classification societies can use for specification and certification.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Wiper types and layout: straight‑line, pendulum, pantograph; internal (I) or external (E) motor drive. Designation format defined (e.g. SL‑I‑1050‑0800‑0900‑230‑AC3‑60).
- Performance / speeds: minimum of 50 wipe cycles/min for the central stroke (100 actual wipes/min); straight‑line linear speed ≥ 68 m/min.
- Wipe quality: blades must clear without streaking or damaging glass; consistent blade pressure over the full wipe area.
- Materials: external metallic parts must be corrosion‑resistant (high‑strength aluminium per ISO 6361/6362/6363 or Cr‑Ni‑Mo corrosion‑resistant steel per ISO/TR 15510); ozone/UV‑resistant structural plastics are allowed.
- Electrical and EMC: low‑voltage safety and electromagnetic compatibility in accordance with IEC 60945.
- De‑icing / cold operation: systems for low‑temperature operation to −25 °C with wind chill; removable heated parts limited to ≤ 24 V.
- Durability tests: continuous accelerated life operation 3 000 h; dry‑run blade endurance (10 × 1 h within 100 h) and one‑year maintenance interval with minimum 3 000 h normal operation.
- Environmental sealing and tests: salt mist per IEC 60945; electrical parts sealed against seawater and capable of 3 000 h exposure; external sealing to IP67, control systems minimum IP30 (IEC 60529).
- Mechanical robustness: shock resistance (10 shocks both directions on three axes at 10 g, 11 ms half‑sine) and vibration testing per IEC 60945; compass safe distances tested per IEC 60945.
Applications and users
ISO 17899 is essential for:
- Marine equipment manufacturers specifying and testing marine wipers
- Shipbuilders and naval architects specifying bridge equipment and visibility systems
- Ship operators procuring heavy‑duty wiper systems for ferries, tankers, cargo ships and offshore vessels
- Classification societies and marine surveyors evaluating compliance and certification
- Bridge designers integrating wiper placement, swept area and electrical supply
