ISO 17959:2014

Overview

ISO 17959:2014 - General requirements for solid wood flooring - defines requirements and test methods for single-layer solid wood flooring boards intended for interior use. Applicable to both finished and unfinished solid wood flooring boards, the standard sets limits for moisture content, geometrical characteristics, deformation, paint film performance, plus packaging and marking requirements. (Note: solid wood parquet is excluded.)

  • Default requirement: individual boards before first shipment should be between 6% and the local equilibrium moisture content (example: France ≈ 7–11%).
  • Measurement: electric moisture meters calibrated by species; oven-dry method (ISO 3130) for disputes.

  • Dimensions provided at a reference moisture content of 9%.
  • Minimum dimensions: thickness ≥ 10 mm, width ≥ 90 mm, length ≥ 400 mm.

  • Deformation limits (expressed as % of relevant dimension): cup ≤ 0.7% of width; bow, spring, twist limits depend on length and installation method.

• Paint film performance (finished boards with paint/sand coating)

  • Adhesion: ≤ class 3 (ISO 2409).
  • Hardness: ≥ H (ISO 15184).
  • Not applicable to oil/wax finishes or unfinished boards.

• Grading and declarations

  • Grading follows ISO 16415.
  • Additional declarations may include reaction to fire, formaldehyde, VOCs, slip resistance, biological durability, etc.

• Packaging & marking

  • Moisture-resistant packaging; marking must include manufacturer/supplier, trade name, reference to ISO 17959, dimensions, species, production date/batch, and quantity/covered surface.

• Test methods

  • Geometrical measurements per Annex A; sample sizes and positions defined for moisture and paint tests.
