This document defines the minimum specification of the pyrotechnic device pocket interface.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19072-1:2019 specifies the minimum pocket interface for pyrotechnic devices used in road vehicles (two-way and three-way connections). Commonly referenced as the pyrotechnic device pocket interface or squib holder interface, this Part 1 document defines dimensional geometry, contact features and material/finish requirements to ensure consistent mating between initiators (squibs) and harness connector assemblies across suppliers and OEMs.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Minimum specification of the pyrotechnic device pocket interface (squib holder inner interface including male contacts).
- Dimensional features: Detailed pocket geometry, anti-rotation features, undercut requirements and mating clearances are defined (including maximum contact point and minimum female contact overlap of 1 mm).
- Male contacts:
- Must be manufactured of solid material (not folded or hollow).
- Plating requirements: comply with ASTM B488 (min. type II, code C; coating thickness class ≥ 0.5 to be agreed between parties).
- Nickel underlayer: per ASTM B689 (type I or II; class ≥ 2).
- Porosity: per ASTM B735, max 2 pores/mm; pores counted when diameter X > 0.05 mm.
- Surface roughness: Ra 0.4 µm per ISO 1302.
- Plating must extend to the tip of the pin and contact/short-circuit areas are specified.
- Retainer and shorting clip: Definitions and optional shorting (shunt) are included; retainer provides coding and insulation where used. Variant without retainer is covered.
- Sealed variant (Annex A): Details space and surfaces reserved for sealing between squib holder and connector.
- Variant without retainer (Annex B) and alternative material/undercut geometry (Annex C): provide optional designs and retention geometry for different manufacturing approaches.
- Normative references: ISO 1302, ISO 8092-2 and ASTM standards referenced for testing, finishes and tolerances.
Practical applications and users
ISO 19072-1 is used by:
- Automotive OEMs and Tier‑1/Tier‑2 suppliers to standardize pyrotechnic device interfaces across models and suppliers.
- Harness and connector manufacturers specifying male/female contact geometry and plating.
- Component designers and tooling engineers developing squib holders, initiators and retainers.
- Safety engineers and certification/test labs verifying interface conformity and durability. Practical benefits include interchangeability, reduced tooling variation, improved reliability of airbag and restraint system initiators, and clearer supplier‑OEM specifications.
