ISO 19449:2015 specifies methods for the direct measurement of the concentration of gaseous exhaust emissions from mopeds as defined in ISO 3833 during inspection or maintenance. The results measured by this International Standard show the concentration of gaseous exhaust emissions in the no-load engine operating condition. It is applicable to mopeds having spark ignition engines (four-stroke engines or two-stroke engines). These methods can be used, either totally or partially, for - periodic inspections in official garages, - official roadside checks, and - maintenance and diagnostic operations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 19449:2015 - Mopeds: Measurement methods for gaseous exhaust emissions during inspection or maintenance defines standardized, direct measurement procedures for gaseous exhaust concentrations from mopeds (as defined in ISO 3833). The standard applies to spark-ignition mopeds (two-stroke and four-stroke) and specifies test conditions, instrumentation, measurement steps and result presentation for no-load (idling) engine operating condition. Tests are intended for inspections, official roadside checks, maintenance and diagnostics.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & applicability
- Applies to mopeds with spark ignition engines (two- and four-stroke) during inspection or maintenance.
- Results represent gaseous emissions at idling (no-load) condition.
- Instrumentation
- Exhaust analyser compliant with ISO/PAS 3930.
- Surface temperature meter (±2 K accuracy between 323 K and 373 K).
- Pulse revolution counter (accuracy ±20 min⁻¹ between 600–2 000 min⁻¹; ±50 min⁻¹ between >2 000–6 000 min⁻¹).
- Ambient temperature meter (±2 K between 278 K and 313 K).
- Preparation & conditioning
- Warm-up procedures: four-stroke engines warmed until head/oil drain bolt surface reaches 328–343 K while running 3 000–6 000 min⁻¹; two-stroke engines run at least 15 minutes or 5 km under urban conditions.
- Choke must be non-operative for testing; ensure exhaust system is leak‑proof.
- Measurement procedure
- Fit revolution counter and probe (probe insertion ≥ 600 mm into exhaust outlet or use extension).
- Warm up, set idling speed (adjust to manufacturer’s idling range if possible), select analyser scale.
- After at least 15 s probe insertion, measure for up to 30 s to obtain minimum and maximum values; report the arithmetic mean of min and max.
- Corrections & reporting
- Measured values corrected per national requirements; examples and formulas (including corrections for engines with secondary air systems) are given in Annex B.
- Use the Annex A test report template for consistent presentation of vehicle, analyser, test conditions and results.
Applications and users
ISO 19449:2015 is practical for:
- Vehicle inspection stations and official garages performing periodic moped inspections
- Roadside enforcement and compliance checks
- Maintenance technicians and diagnostic engineers verifying emission control systems
- Accredited test laboratories and regulatory agencies developing inspection protocols
- Moped manufacturers for conformity checks during maintenance procedures
