ISO 20022-4:2013 was prepared to complement the ISO 20022 Metamodel, as specified in ISO 20022-1:2013, with the XML syntax transformation rules to be applied by the ISO 20022 Registration Authority in order to translate an ISO 20022 compliant MessageDefinition into an XML Schema for the description and validation of XML Messages. It specifies the transformation rules from level 3 to level 4. It is a deterministic transformation, meaning that the resulting XML Schema is completely predictable for a given MessageDefinition. There is neither manual input to the transformation itself nor manual adjustment to the result of the transformation.

Overview
ISO 20022-4:2013 - XML Schema generation defines the deterministic rules that the ISO 20022 Registration Authority (RA) uses to transform an ISO 20022 MessageDefinition (level 3 logical model) into a validated XML Schema (XSD) (level 4 physical model). The standard complements the ISO 20022 metamodel (ISO 20022-1) by specifying exact XML syntax transformation rules so that every MessageDefinition yields a fully predictable, machine-generated XML Schema without manual intervention.

- Any schemaLocation may be declared, but schema resolution must rely on the namespace, not the schemaLocation.
- Default namespaces are permitted; element/attribute names follow the ISO 20022 XML name abbreviation algorithm (published by ISO 20022).
- Schema metadata: each XSD contains a top XML comment with RA release number, generation date and optional documentation text.
- Completeness: the transformation rules are comprehensive-no additional information may be added to the XSD beyond what the standard allows.
