ISO 20242-4:2011 defines the formatting, syntax and semantic rules for describing device and coordinator capabilities with XML schema, and the configuration of devices with XML.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 20242-4:2011 - "Industrial automation systems and integration - Service interface for testing applications - Part 4: Device capability profile template" specifies how to describe device and coordinator capabilities and device configuration using XML. The standard defines the formatting, syntax and semantic rules for creating a Device Capability Profile Template (DCPT) and for producing Device Capability Descriptions (DCDs), Coordinator Capability Descriptions (CCDs) and Parameterization Instance Descriptions (PIDs). It uses the ISO 15745-1 information exchange profile as a skeleton and aligns with the Virtual Device Service Interface (VDSI) model in ISO 20242-3.
Key Topics
- XML schema-based templates: Defines a generic DCPT (technology-neutral) and rules for creating technology-specific extensions.
- DCD / CCD structure: Rules for DCDs (device-driver capability schemas) and CCDs (coordinator capability schemas), including required identification and capability description elements.
- PID instances: Procedures for creating PID XML instances that instantiate a CCD and one or more DCDs to deliver configuration data for runtime setups.
- Framework and inheritance model: Class diagrams and aggregation/inheritance relationships showing how generic, technology-specific and device-/coordinator-specific profiles relate.
- Interoperability focus: Emphasizes vendor-supplied schema extensions so device drivers and coordinators can be configured and integrated consistently.
- Annex examples: Informative annexes provide technology-specific DCPT examples (e.g., ASAM GDI, manufacturing applications, ORiN robot applications).
Applications
- Device and driver vendors: Create and publish DCD XML schemas with drivers to describe supported virtual device capabilities and parameters.
- Coordinator and middleware developers: Define CCD schemas to declare coordinator features and supported application program interface qualifications.
- System integrators and OEMs: Use configuration tools to import CCDs and DCDs, build PID XML instances and automate device configuration and deployment.
- Test automation and lab environments: Standardizes capability descriptions to enable repeatable test setups, interoperability between tools, and vendor-independent configuration.
- Automation software vendors: Implement VDSI-compatible configuration routines that read PID instances to initialize devices via device drivers.
