Overview
ISO 22434:2022 - "Gas cylinders - Inspection and maintenance of valves" specifies requirements for inspection, maintenance and refurbishment of valves (including ball valves and valves with integrated pressure regulator (VIPRs)) fitted to refillable transportable gas cylinders, cylinder bundles, pressure drums and tubes that convey compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases. The standard excludes valves for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and does not cover routine filling checks. It is intended for valves re-used during periodic inspection or when changing gas service.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to valves on refillable cylinders, bundles, drums and tubes; not for LPG valves; complements ISO 11621 for change of gas service.
- Inspection procedure: External examination after cleaning (clause 5.2). Inspect for spindle operation, corrosion, cracks, damaged threads, worn sealing surfaces, evidence of heat/fire, contamination, tampering, damaged accessories (PRDs, gauges), wrong PRD rating, inappropriate valve for gas service.
- Cleaning and safety: Cleaning media must be compatible with valve and gas service (e.g., medical, oxygen); hazardous residues require safety assessment and controlled disposal (clause 5.2.2).
- Acceptance criteria: Valves without listed defects may re-enter service; defective valves must be maintained or scrapped (clauses 5.2.5 and 8).
- Maintenance categories:
- Minor repairs: Non-pressure-retaining parts (handwheels, restrictors).
- Major repairs: Replacement of pressure-boundary accessories without dismantling; PRDs and residual pressure devices must match manufacturer specs; gland nuts may require re-torquing to original torque.
- Refurbishment: Dismantling only if valve is designed for it; decontamination, component evaluation, replacement of non-metallic seals per manufacturer instructions (clauses 5.3.1–5.3.3).
- Operational safety: Major repairs and refurbishment only on depressurized or removed valves; personnel must be competent (clause 4.2). ISO 25760 is noted for valve removal guidance.
- Documentation elements: Testing, marking, packaging and scrapping requirements are covered in the standard (see clauses 5.4–8).
Applications and who uses it
- Gas suppliers, cylinder manufacturers and repair centers for periodic inspection programs
- Cylinder maintenance workshops and refurbishing facilities
- Safety managers, technical inspectors and regulatory bodies enforcing transport and storage rules
- Organizations changing cylinder gas service or extending valve service life (in coordination with manufacturers)
