Overview
ISO 23552-1:2007 defines safety, construction and performance requirements for electronic fuel/air ratio control (ERC) systems used with gas and/or oil burners and appliances. The standard applies to closed‑loop, modulating ERCs and covers test procedures, installation information and manufacturer declarations necessary to verify safe operation. It is intended for ERCs tested independently, as part of an appliance, or as part of a burner and does not classify devices by heat input.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies only to closed‑loop fuel/air ratio controls; does not set a fixed accuracy for the combustion process but requires manufacturers to declare typical accuracy of the closed loop.
- System composition: ERCs must include an electronic control module, actuators for fuel and air and allocated feedback signals (at least two actuators plus either two actuator sensors or a process sensor).
- Feedback options: Acceptable feedbacks include actuator position, fan speed, flow/ΔP, pressure and process measurements (fuel/air ratio signal, flame signal, flue‑gas signal).
- Safety behavior: Defines safe or “defined” states (passive safe output, active protective shutdown, or continued safe operation), fault reaction time, safety shut‑down and lock‑out behavior (volatile or non‑volatile).
- Functional and interface requirements: ERC must interlock with the burner control (per IEC 60730-2-5) so safety of the complete system is not degraded; start‑up, restart and lock‑out sequences are specified.
- Testing and environmental conditions: Type testing under ambient (20 °C ±5 °C, 40–80% RH) and extended temperatures (0 °C and 60 °C or declared ambient extremes). Electrical tests include declared rated voltages and variations (85% of lowest and 110% of highest rated voltages).
- Construction and materials: Requires continuous self‑checking modes and considers material durability and dimensional stability for plastics; special requirements for electromechanical actuators and position feedback (see Annex B).
- Documentation: Manufacturer declarations for sensors, actuators and repeatability (Annex A) and regional adaptations (Annex C, e.g. Japan).
Applications and users
ISO 23552-1 is used by:
- Manufacturers of electronic fuel/air ratio control systems and actuators
- Burner and appliance OEMs integrating ERCs into gas/oil combustion equipment
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing type testing and conformity assessment
- Safety, combustion and controls engineers specifying or validating closed‑loop burner controls
Practical uses include ensuring safe modulating combustion, validating feedback configurations, and documenting installation/maintenance requirements for HVAC, industrial and domestic combustion appliances.
