This document specifies a method for sampling and handling earthworms from field soils as a prerequisite for using these animals as bioindicators (e.g. to assess the quality of a soil as a habitat for organisms). This document is applicable to all terrestrial biotopes in which earthworms occur. This document does not apply to semi-terrestrial soils (i.e. soils that are partly aquatic, such as bogs, beaches, marshes, stream margins) and it can be difficult to use under extreme climatic or geographical conditions (e.g. in high mountains). Methods for other soil organism groups, such as micro-arthropods and enchytraeids (mesofauna), are covered in other parts of the ISO 23611 series.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 23611-1:2026 is part of the internationally recognized ISO 23611 series focusing on soil quality and sampling of soil invertebrates. This specific standard outlines standardized procedures for the hand-sorting and chemical extraction of earthworms from field soils. The primary goal is to facilitate the use of earthworms as reliable bioindicators for soil quality, supporting ecological assessment, pollution monitoring, and soil habitat evaluation.
The methodology is applicable across all terrestrial biotopes inhabited by earthworms, excluding semi-terrestrial or partly aquatic environments such as bogs and stream margins. Using a combination of physical and chemical extraction methods, the standard ensures representative, reproducible, and non-biased sampling essential for environmental monitoring and soil quality studies.
Key Topics
-
Standardized Sampling Methods The document specifies how to select and prepare sample plots, carry out hand-sorting, and apply chemical extraction (using allyl isothiocyanate, AITC) to ensure complete earthworm recovery.
-
Identification and Biomass Assessment Guidelines are provided for the preservation, live identification, and biomass determination of earthworm samples, supporting both taxonomic and ecological studies.
-
Earthworm Ecological Categories The standard highlights earthworm ecological diversity, distinguishing among endogeic (soil-dwelling), epigeic (surface-dwelling), and anecic (vertical burrowers) groups, which have varying importance for soil structure, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem function.
-
Bioindicator Applications Using earthworms as indicators allows assessment of:
- Soil quality and fertility
- Effects of chemical pollutants or soil management practices
- Changes in habitat suitability for soil organisms
-
Sample Handling and Safety The procedure addresses safe handling and storage of earthworm samples, including chemical safety guidance for AITC and formalin use.
Applications
Implementing ISO 23611-1 adds significant practical value for:
-
Environmental Consultants and Remediators Standardized protocols help determine whether soil at a given site supports healthy invertebrate communities or requires remediation.
-
Agricultural and Land Use Assessments Earthworm abundance and diversity are essential metrics for monitoring the sustainability of agricultural practices and their impact on soil health.
-
Research and Academic Studies The methodology provides reproducible and comparable results, enabling robust data collection for taxonomic, ecological, and environmental pollution studies.
-
Regulatory Monitoring and Policy Making National and international bodies rely on standardized sampling techniques to inform regulations, track environmental change, and assess restoration success.
-
Long-term Ecological Monitoring Inclusion in larger soil fauna monitoring programs supports broad ecosystem assessments and trend analysis.
Related Standards
ISO 23611-1 is one component of a broader framework for environmental and soil quality standards. Relevant related standards include:
- ISO 23611-5 - Methods for sampling edaphic macrofauna
- ISO 23611-6 - Guidance on general field study designs for soil invertebrate sampling
- ISO 10390 - Determination of soil pH
- ISO 10694 - Measurement of organic and total carbon in soil
- ISO 11268-3 - Determination of effects of pollutants on earthworms in the field
- ISO 11277 - Particle size distribution in mineral soil
- ISO 11465 - Determination of dry residue and water content
By aligning sampling efforts with ISO 23611-1:2026, stakeholders in environmental science, agriculture, ecology, and policy ensure consistency, data comparability, and international acceptance of their findings concerning soil invertebrate communities, particularly earthworms.
