This document specifies the conditioning of leather for physical and mechanical testing in standard atmospheres. It is applicable to all types of dry leather.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2419:2024 specifies the procedure for conditioning leather specimens and test pieces in defined standard atmospheres before conducting physical and mechanical tests. This international standard, developed by ISO in collaboration with IULTCS, establishes uniformity by controlling temperature and relative humidity, ensuring leather test results are reproducible and comparable globally. The requirements set forth in ISO 2419:2024 apply to all types of dry leather and are essential for laboratories, quality assurance, manufacturers, and research institutions in the leather industry.
Key Topics
-
Specimen and Test Piece Conditioning The standard outlines how leather specimens and test pieces must be exposed to controlled temperature and humidity for a specified period to standardize their physical state prior to testing.
-
Standard Atmospheres
- Reference Standard Atmosphere: 23.0 °C temperature and 50.0% relative humidity
- Alternative Atmospheres:
- Specific: 20.0 °C and 65.0% RH
- Tropical: 27.0 °C and 65.0% RH
- Tolerance Levels: Temperature ±2.0 °C, Humidity ±5.0%
-
Conditioning Process
- Specimens must be supported with free air access on all surfaces, maintaining airflow.
- Minimum conditioning time is 24 hours for dry leather.
- Leather with high moisture content should be dried before conditioning.
-
Testing and Reporting Testing should take place in the same atmosphere used for conditioning when required. The final test report must document reference to ISO 2419:2024, the climate conditions, any alternative or deviated procedures, and test date.
Applications
ISO 2419:2024 is widely applicable across the leather supply chain, supporting:
- Product Quality Control Ensures consistent reference conditions so manufacturers can reliably compare physical and mechanical properties of different leather batches.
- Research and Development Standardizes experimental setups in academic and industrial research, facilitating the development of innovative leather materials and processing technologies.
- Compliance and Certification Essential for meeting regulatory, contractual, or certification requirements in international trade, where standardized test conditions are mandated.
- Testing Laboratories Provides clear guidelines for sample preparation and climate control, supporting credible and repeatable test results for customers.
Leather products such as footwear, automotive interiors, upholstery, and fashion accessories all benefit from testing done under these controlled, standard atmospheres, making ISO 2419:2024 crucial for reliable product performance verification.
