Abstract

Overview

ISO 24263:2020 - "Footwear - Attachment strength of straps, trims and accessories" - specifies a test method to determine the attachment strength of footwear upper components joined to the sole: . The standard defines sampling, conditioning, test-piece preparation, apparatus requirements, test procedures and how to report results to quantify attachment strength in newton (N).

Apparatus:
- Tensile testing machine with jaw separation rate (100 ± 10) mm/min.

- Clamping device/jaws that prevent slipping and do not damage samples; examples are provided for rigid trims and straps.
- Vernier caliper with 0.5 mm divisions; laces with higher attachment strength than the eyelet/hook; cutting tool.
Sampling and conditioning:
- Straps: at least two shoes tested; width measured at the feather line.
- Trims: at least five trim pieces; testable only if a 1 mm gauge can be inserted between trim and upper.
- Hooks/eyelets: at least five test-pieces from separate uppers or detached uppers.
- Condition samples 24 h before testing per ISO 18454: (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5)% RH.
Preparation & procedure highlights:
- For straps: make a precise incision ≈ 15 mm from where strap joins sole to isolate the attachment, measure width, clamp shoe and strap, align horizontally and pull until separation.
- For trims: clamp trim and substrate appropriately (use specified rigid trim clamping where needed) and pull until failure.
- For hooks/eyelets: align jaws, pass lace through eyelet/hook and pull until failure; record failure mode.
Results & reporting:
- Express results in N (maximum force per sample; averages for trims and eyelets where specified).
- Record failure type (strap breakage, sole breakage, detachment, trim breakage).
- Test report must identify the footwear, reference ISO 24263:2020, part tested, results in N, test date and any deviations.
