Overview
ISO 24294:2021 - "Timber - Round and sawn timber - Vocabulary" is an international vocabulary standard that defines terms and definitions used across the timber supply chain. The second edition (2021) updates and clarifies terminology for identification of trees and tree components, stages of processing, grading, dimensions, anatomical structure, timber features, moisture conditions, and conditions related to stain, fungal and insect attack. It expressly excludes terms related to strength properties of wood, engineered timber products and timber structures.
Key topics
This vocabulary standard organizes and standardizes terminology so stakeholders speak the same language. Major topic areas include:
- Terms and definitions for basic concepts such as wood, timber, species, hardwood and softwood.
- Round timber vocabulary (logs, long poles, butt/middle/top logs, debarking, felling, bundles/piles).
- Sawn timber vocabulary (sawn timber types, rough sawn, regularized, prepared timber).
- Moisture content and drying terminology relevant to handling and end-use condition.
- Dimensions for round and sawn timber (diameters, lengths, permitted deviations and sizing concepts).
- Anatomical structure and common features (sapwood, heartwood, knots, grain).
- Features, defects and grading - terms that affect sorting, grading and end-use suitability.
- Biological deterioration terms covering stain, fungal attack and insect/wood-borer degradation.
The 2021 edition consolidates and re-orders term categories and provides updated, clarified definitions to improve international harmonization.
Practical applications and users
ISO 24294:2021 is a reference vocabulary rather than a prescriptive performance standard. Typical uses include:
- Supporting clear, consistent procurement contracts, product labels and commercial descriptions.
- Guiding grading, inspection and quality control at forest, log yard and sawmill operations.
- Informing specifications for processing, storage, drying and packaging of round and sawn timber.
- Training and documentation for mill operators, inspectors, traders, builders and importers.
- Enabling consistent terminology in research, regulation and standards development.
- Facilitating international trade by reducing ambiguity between trading partners and across languages.
Primary users: timber manufacturers, sawmills, wholesalers, timber merchants, construction professionals (non-structural terminology), government regulators, standards bodies, and academic researchers.
Related standards
ISO 24294 is intended to be used alongside other ISO standards and national grading systems. It replaces ISO 24294:2013 and ISO 1032:1974 and complements standards addressing timber testing, grading rules and product specifications (see ISO Online Browsing Platform for related documents).
