This document specifies a method for determining the density of paints, varnishes and related products using a metal or Gay-Lussac pycnometer. The method is limited to materials of low or medium viscosity at the temperature of test. The Hubbard pycnometer (see ISO 3507) can be used for highly viscous materials.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2811-1:2023 - Paints and varnishes - Determination of density - Part 1: Pycnometer method specifies a standardized laboratory procedure to measure the density of paints, varnishes and related products using a metal or Gay‑Lussac pycnometer. The method applies to materials of low or medium viscosity at the test temperature. For highly viscous products the Hubbard pycnometer (ISO 3507) is recommended.
Key topics and requirements
- Principle: Density (ρ = mass/volume) is obtained from the mass difference between an empty and filled pycnometer and the pycnometer volume at test temperature.
- Reference test temperature: (23.0 ± 0.5) °C is specified for international reference; other agreed temperatures (e.g., 20.0 ± 0.5 °C) may be used.
- Apparatus:
- Metal pycnometer: 50 cm3 or 100 cm3, corrosion‑resistant with concave lid.
- Glass (Gay‑Lussac) pycnometer: 10–100 cm3.
- Analytical balance: max error 1 mg for
