ISO 3059:2012 specifies the control of the viewing conditions for magnetic particle and penetrant testing. It includes minimum requirements for the illuminance and UV-A irradiance and their measurement. It is intended for use when the human eye is the primary detection aid. ISO 3059:2012 does not cover the use of actinic blue light sources.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3059:2012 - "Non-destructive testing - Penetrant testing and magnetic particle testing - Viewing conditions" defines controlled viewing conditions for visual detection in NDT when the human eye is the primary detection aid. The standard specifies minimum illuminance and UV‑A irradiance levels, measurement methods, safety precautions and calibration requirements for instruments used in penetrant testing and magnetic particle testing. It does not cover the use of actinic blue light sources.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Applies to penetrant testing and magnetic particle testing viewing conditions where visual inspection is primary.
- Illuminance (white light / colour contrast techniques):
- Removal of excess penetrant: ≥ 350 lx.
- Inspection: ≥ 500 lx (in some cases ≥ 1 000 lx may be required).
- Colour temperature for artificial light: ≥ 2 500 K (recommended > 3 300 K).
- Even illumination; avoid glare, reflections and stray light.
- UV‑A (fluorescent techniques):
- Source centered at (365 ± 5) nm, FWHM ≈ 30 nm.
- Removal of excess penetrant: ≥ 100 μW/cm² (1 W/m²) with illuminance **
