Establishes a system of viscosity classification for industrial liquid lubricants and related fluids including mineral oils used as lubricants, hydraulic fluids, electrical oils and for other applications. The usual method for kinematic-viscosity determination is that specified in ISO 3104. There may be some pure chemicals and naturally occurring products, used as lubricants, which will not fall within the classification.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3448:1992 defines a standardized viscosity classification system for industrial liquid lubricants. This International Standard, developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 28, covers a comprehensive range of industrial lubricants including mineral oils, hydraulic fluids, and electrical insulating oils. The classification is based on kinematic viscosity measured at 40 °C and provides a uniform method to designate lubricants according to their viscosity. By doing so, it facilitates lubricant selection, specification, and equipment design across industries worldwide.
The standard replaces the original 1975 edition with technical revisions to enhance clarity and applicability. ISO 3448:1992 aligns with other major classification systems such as ASTM and BSI, offering global consistency in viscosity grading of industrial lubricants.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose The classification applies to liquid lubricants ranging in kinematic viscosity from 2 to 3,200 mm²/s at 40 °C. It encompasses petroleum-based fluids and addresses the need for a common framework for suppliers, users, and designers to specify lubricant viscosity objectively.
-
Viscosity Measurement Viscosity is determined by the kinematic method specified in ISO 3104. The classification acknowledges limitations with non-Newtonian fluids, recommending users detail the viscosity measurement method for such materials.
-
Viscosity Grades The system defines 20 discrete viscosity grades labeled ISO VG 2 through ISO VG 3200. Each grade corresponds to a mid-point kinematic viscosity with ±10% tolerance, increasing by approximately 50% between adjacent grades on a logarithmic scale for practical engineering use.
-
Designation Format Lubricants are identified using the format: ISO viscosity grade . . . (ISO 3448) or abbreviated as ISO VG... (e.g., ISO VG 46).
-
Temperature Reference The standard uses 40 °C as the reference temperature, chosen because it matches average service temperatures for industrial lubricants and aligns with viscosity index determinations.
-
Exclusions and Adaptations Some specialty or natural lubricants may fall outside the classification but may continue to be used under specific agreements. The standard encourages manufacturers to adjust lubricant formulations to conform to the defined viscosity grades.
Applications
-
Lubricant Selection and Specification ISO 3448 provides a common language for specifying lubricant viscosity in industrial applications, ensuring proper performance characteristics to match equipment requirements.
-
Equipment Design Machine designers use ISO VG grades to recommend lubricant viscosities that optimize performance, durability, and energy efficiency for bearings, gears, hydraulic systems, and electrical equipment.
-
Quality Control and Production Lubricant producers use the classification to formulate products that meet industry benchmarks, facilitating consistency, quality assurance, and easier compatibility for end users.
-
Global Trade and Compliance Adopting ISO 3448 enhances interoperability and international trade by providing a recognized standard for lubricant viscosity classification, reducing confusion and technical barriers.
