Overview
ISO 36:2020 - "Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic - Determination of adhesion to textile fabrics" specifies a standardized stripping test to measure the adhesion strength between rubber (vulcanized or thermoplastic) and textile plies. The method determines the force per unit width required to separate bonded plies, using flat strip test pieces or cylindrical surfaces with internal diameter > ~50 mm. It is intended for quality control, material development and compliance testing of rubber-to-textile assemblies, but excludes coated fabrics (see ISO 2411) and textile conveyor belts (ISO 252).

Key Topics
- Scope & limitations
- Measures force to strip two fabric plies bonded with rubber or a rubber layer bonded to fabric.
- Not applicable to coated fabrics or conveyor belts; not suitable for ply surfaces with sharp bends or gross irregularities.
- Test specimen
- Standard width: 25 mm ± 0.5 mm; separation length at least 100 mm.
- Test pieces cut with length either parallel to warp or weft; laboratory preparation method using film was added in 2020.
- Apparatus & settings
- Power-driven tensile/stripping machine with dynamometer, compliant with ISO 5893:2019 (class 1 accuracy).
- Rate of traverse: 50 mm/min ± 5 mm/min; grips must prevent slipping and keep strips in the same plane.
- Data acquisition via autographic recorder or computer; data processed per ISO 6133.
- Procedure & conditioning
- Minimum interval between vulcanization and testing: 16 hours.
- For non-product tests: max interval 4 weeks; for product tests, preferably within 3 months.
- Conditioning of test pieces follows ISO 23529; specific intervals apply after buffing or preparation.
- Results & reporting
- Adhesion strength reported as median of individual results in N/mm.
- Failure modes classified (e.g., R, RA, AT, RB, T, RT) and documented in the test report.
- Calibration
- Mandatory verification/calibration per Annex A and guidance in ISO 18899.
Applications
- Quality control for rubber-to-textile laminates, footwear components, hoses, bonded fabric products and technical textiles.
- R&D and formulation screening for rubber compounds and adhesives to optimize bond performance.
- Supplier qualification, incoming inspection and contract verification where adhesion to textile fabrics is a critical property.
- Testing laboratories performing standardized adhesion/peel tests for certification and comparative evaluations.
Related Standards
Use ISO 36:2020 when consistent, reproducible measurement of rubber–textile adhesion is required for product performance, specification compliance and material development.
