Applicable to products whether or not they are homogeneous and whether or not they contain polyphosphoric acids. Specifies preliminary hydrolysis of the polyphosphoric acids by boiling in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The precipitation of the phosphoric acid is carried out in the form of quinoline phosphomolybdate in the presence of acetone. Filtration by a filter crucible, washing, drying and weighing of the precipitate.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3706:1976 specifies a gravimetric laboratory method for determining the total phosphorus(V) oxide content (P2O5) in phosphoric acid intended for industrial use, including foodstuffs. The method is applicable to homogeneous and non‑homogeneous phosphoric acids and to products containing polyphosphoric acids, which are first hydrolysed. Results are reported as mass percent P2O5.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Works for phosphoric acids whether homogeneous or not, and for samples containing polyphosphoric species (after hydrolysis).
- Preliminary hydrolysis: Polyphosphoric acids are hydrolysed by boiling the sample in the presence of hydrochloric acid before analysis.
- Reagent and precipitation chemistry: Phosphoric acid is precipitated as quinoline phosphomolybdate using a citromolybdic reagent and quinoline; precipitation is aided by acetone.
- Filtration and weighing: Precipitate is collected on a fritted glass filter crucible (porosity P10, 4–10 µm), washed, dried in an electric oven (250 ± 10 °C is specified), cooled in a desiccator and weighed. Precision requirements for weighing and tare are specified in the method.
- Quality controls: A parallel blank determination is required. The method includes prescribed sample‑preparation variants for non‑homogeneous materials and guidance for recovering and analysing insoluble residues separately.
- Calculation: Results are expressed as % P2O5. The standard provides calculation formulas and conversion factors (the method uses a conversion factor of 0.03207 for the quinoline phosphomolybdate precipitate).
Practical applications and users
Who uses ISO 3706:1976:
- Quality control and analytical chemistry laboratories at phosphoric acid manufacturers (industrial and food‑grade producers).
- Food industry quality and regulatory teams assessing food‑grade phosphoric acid additives.
- Fertilizer and chemical producers requiring verified P2O5 content for process control and product specification.
- Third‑party testing laboratories and regulatory agencies performing compliance testing.
Why use it:
- Provides a standardized, traceable gravimetric procedure for accurate total phosphorus determination.
- Useful where instrumental methods are unavailable or where a primary gravimetric reference is desired.
