For some fabrics, mass per unit length and mass per unit area are related simply by the width of the fabric, but for other fabrics variations in structure may introduce an important distinction between mass per unit length and mass per unit area. The methods are applicable to woven fabrics (including those of "stretch" type) made up full width or folded down the middle, and apply to the determination of the fabric mass of complete pieces as well as of sample length.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3801:1977 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies methods for determining the mass per unit length and mass per unit area of woven fabrics. This standard applies to a wide range of woven textiles, including "stretch" types, whether made up full width or folded, and is suitable for both complete fabric pieces and sample lengths.
Understanding the mass properties of woven fabrics is essential for quality control, product specification, and performance evaluation in the textile industry. ISO 3801 addresses situations where mass per unit length and mass per unit area may not be simply related by the fabric width, especially when variations in fabric structure exist.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability The standard covers woven fabrics conditioned in a standardized atmosphere and outlines several test methods tailored for different fabric conditions and sample sizes.
-
Test Atmosphere and Conditioning Conditioning the fabric in a standard atmosphere (65% ± 2% relative humidity and 20°C ± 2°C, or 27°C ± 2°C in tropical regions) is critical to ensure consistent, repeatable measurements.
-
Mass Measurement Methods Five primary methods are described to determine fabric mass, addressing different practical scenarios:
- Methods 1 and 3 for pieces or samples fully conditioned in the standard atmosphere.
- Methods 2 and 4 for cases where conditioning the entire piece is impractical; these involve correction factors based on comparative measurements.
- Method 5 for small specimens, requiring precise cutting and weighing to assess mass per unit area.
-
Apparatus and Tools Includes calibrated steel rules, balances with high accuracy, cutting devices for precise specimens, and smooth tables for preparation and measurement to ensure accurate results.
-
Calculation Procedures Detailed formulas are provided to calculate mass per unit length and mass per unit area from measured length, width, and mass under standardized conditions, allowing for rounding to the nearest gram where applicable.
-
Selvedge Considerations If selvedge mass differs significantly from the main fabric, the test methods specify excluding selvedges to avoid skewed results.
-
Test Reporting Requirements Reports must state the adherence to ISO 3801, the method used, results per specimen, test dates, whether selvedges were included, and note any deviations from the procedure.
Applications
ISO 3801 is vital for stakeholders in the textile manufacturing and quality assurance sectors to:
- Verify fabric specifications related to material mass.
- Ensure consistency and uniformity in woven fabric production.
- Facilitate communications between manufacturers, buyers, and testers by providing standardized measurement methods.
- Support product development where fabric weight affects performance characteristics like durability, feel, and suitability for end-use.
- Resolve disputes or technical clarifications regarding fabric mass properties using internationally recognized methods.
This standard applies to a wide variety of woven fabrics, including complex or patterned textiles, and is especially important where variations in weave structure or fabric width impact mass measurements.

- ISO 139 – Textiles: Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing, which defines the environment for consistent textile testing.
- ISO 3932 – Textiles: Woven fabrics – Determination of length, underpinning the measurement of fabric length in conjunction with ISO 3801 procedures.
- ISO 3933 – Textiles: Woven fabrics – Determination of width, essential for calculating mass per unit area and interpreting fabric dimensions.
Adherence to these complementary standards ensures accurate, repeatable, and internationally accepted fabric mass determination, enabling efficient quality control and product development in textile industries worldwide.
