Abstract
Overview
ISO 4006:1991 - Measurement of fluid flow in closed conduits - Vocabulary and symbols - is an ISO international standard that defines recommended terms and corresponding symbols used in the measurement of fluid flow in closed conduits. Published by ISO/TC 30 (Measurement of fluid flow in closed conduits), this second edition (1991) standardizes language and notation to avoid ambiguity and inconsistent usage across countries and industries.
Key topics
The standard organizes and standardizes terminology and symbols across measurement topics, including:
- General fluid-mechanics terms (flow-rate, velocity distribution, flow profile, swirling flow)
- Symbols and subscripts for common quantities: cross-sectional area (A), flow-rate (mass qm, volume qv), pressure (P, ΔP), velocity (u, V), Reynolds number (Re), Mach number (Ma), sound speed (c), viscosity (μ, ν), density (ρ), and others
- Device- and method-related terms covering differential-pressure devices, critical-flow measurement, velocity–area methods, tracer methods, electromagnetic methods, weighing and volumetric methods, instability and variable-area meters, ultrasonic methods, and other metering techniques
- Uncertainty and statistical terms (random/systematic uncertainties, standard deviation, mean, degrees of freedom)
- Subscripts and qualifiers (upstream/downstream, effective, nominal, residual)
- Annexes: bibliography and English/French alphabetical indexes
The standard also documents scope limits: it excludes self-evident terms, terms specific to open-channel flow (see ISO 772), and extremely specialized measurement techniques that cannot be standardized.
Practical applications
ISO 4006 provides a consistent vocabulary and symbol set for:
- Preparing technical specifications, calibration certificates and test reports for flow meters
- Writing engineering drawings, instrumentation lists and process documentation
- Comparing data and performance across manufacturers, laboratories and international projects
- Teaching and training materials in flow measurement, metrology and instrument engineering
By aligning terminology and symbols, the standard reduces misunderstandings in procurement, testing, regulatory reporting and interoperability of flow measurement systems.
Who should use it
- Flow and process engineers
- Instrumentation and control engineers
- Metrologists and calibration laboratories
- Flowmeter manufacturers and product documentation teams
- Standards writers, regulatory bodies and educators in fluid measurement
