ISO 4126-9:2008 covers the application and installations of safety devices such as safety valves, safety valves and bursting disc safety devices in combination, pilot-operated safety valves and controlled safety pressure-relief systems for the protection of pressure equipment. ISO 4126-6 covers the selection, application and installation of bursting disc safety devices. ISO 4126-9:2008 describes the normative requirements for applications and installations of safety devices to protect static pressure equipment. The information contained in ISO 4126-9:2008 assumes single-phase flow of the fluid discharged from the safety device. ISO 4126-10 provides guidance specific to two-phase flow conditions. Equipment connected together in a system by piping of adequate capacity, which is free from potential blockages and does not contain any valve that can isolate any part, can be considered to be a safety system for the application of pressure relief. ISO 4126-9:2008 does not deal with other safety devices, such as safety related monitoring, control and regulation devices and other limiting devices allowed by some national regulations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4126-9:2008, "Safety devices for protection against excessive pressure - Part 9", defines application and installation requirements for safety devices used to protect pressure equipment from overpressure. It covers safety valves, combinations of safety valves and bursting disc safety devices, pilot‑operated safety valves (POSV) and controlled safety pressure‑relief systems (CSPRS). The standard addresses static pressure equipment and assumes single‑phase flow for discharge; two‑phase guidance is given in ISO 4126‑10. ISO 4126‑6 covers stand‑alone bursting disc selection and installation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: Clear terminology for safety devices, safety systems, accumulated pressure, fail‑safe, redundancy and independence.
- Risk consideration: Requirement for realistic risk analysis and evaluation to select appropriate safety concepts and device capacities.
- Pressure limitation: Devices must limit pressure so the maximum allowable accumulated pressure is not exceeded; sizing must use actual pressure/temperature and consider back pressure.
- Inlet and outlet line requirements: Guidance on sizing and design to avoid flow restrictions or blockages that can impair relieving capacity.
- Installation rules: Positioning, mounting and arrangement of safety valves, POSVs and CSPRS; rules for series/parallel configurations and for avoiding isolating valves that could negate protection.
- Isolation, lifting device and maintenance: Recommendations on isolation procedures, permitted lifting devices and ensuring fail‑safe operation.
- Informative annexes: Practical calculations and guidance for multiple device sizing, inlet‑line sizing, built‑up back pressure, reaction forces and noise level estimation.
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO 4126‑9 is used by:
- Pressure vessel and piping design engineers specifying overpressure protection.
- Safety and process engineers performing risk assessments and selecting relief systems.
- Plant operators and maintenance teams installing and testing safety valves, POSVs, CSPRS and combined systems.
- Manufacturers of safety devices ensuring installations meet international normative requirements.
- Inspectors and regulatory authorities assessing compliance with overpressure protection requirements.
Practical uses include sizing and siting relief devices, designing inlet/outlet piping to preserve relieving capacity, defining redundancy/independence strategies, and documenting safety system layouts for compliance and audits.
