Overview
ISO 44004:2021 - Collaborative business relationship management provides practical guidance for large organizations seeking to engage micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in collaborative relationship programmes. Based on the 12 collaborative relationship management principles in ISO 44001, ISO 44004 helps large organizations adapt policies, processes and leadership approaches so collaborations with MSMEs are productive, scalable and mutually beneficial.
Key topics
The standard addresses implementation and adjustment of collaborative practices across a set of focused topics (see clause 5.1–5.12):
- Relationship management - structured, sustainable processes and the need to scale complexity to suit MSMEs.
- Visions and values - assessing alignment and using facilitated discussion or self-declaration where appropriate.
- Business objectives - understanding MSME drivers and creating joint business cases.
- Collaborative leadership - shifting from command-and-control to influence, consensus and shared vision.
- Governance and processes - fit-for-purpose governance, support for MSME clusters/ecosystems and navigation aids.
- Collaborative competence and behaviour - competence development and behavioural expectations.
- Trust and mutual benefit - building commitment and fair value sharing.
- Value creation - designing collaboration to deliver measurable value for both parties.
- Information and knowledge sharing - appropriate transparency and data exchange.
- Risk management - proportionate risk allocation and protection for all parties.
- Measurement and optimization - performance metrics and continuous improvement.
- Exit strategy - agreed approaches for relationship transition or closure.
The document contains practical recommendations such as establishing an MSME engagement policy, appointing an MSME relationship manager, creating joint relationship plans, accepting proportionate compliance declarations and supporting MSME clusters.
