ISO 4649:2017 specifies two methods for the determination of the resistance of rubber to abrasion by means of a rotating cylindrical drum device. The methods involve determination of the volume loss due to the abrasive action of rubbing a test piece over a specified grade of abrasive sheet. Method A is for a non-rotating test piece and method B is for a rotating test piece. For each method, the result can be reported as a relative volume loss or an abrasion resistance index. These test methods are suitable for comparative testing, quality control, specification compliance testing, referee purposes and research and development work. No close relation between the results of this abrasion test and service performance can be inferred. NOTE The abrasion loss is often more uniform using the rotating test piece because the whole surface of the test piece is in contact with the abrasive sheet over the duration of the test. However, there is considerable experience using the non-rotating test piece.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4649:2017 specifies laboratory methods for measuring the abrasion resistance of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber using a rotating cylindrical drum device. The standard defines two test methods - Method A (non-rotating test piece) and Method B (rotating test piece) - and two ways to report results: relative volume loss or an abrasion resistance index (ARI). ISO 4649:2017 is intended for comparative testing, quality control, specification compliance, referee testing and R&D; it does not by itself predict in‑service wear performance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: A cylindrical rubber specimen is abraded across a specified grade of abrasive sheet mounted on a rotating drum; mass loss and material density are used to compute volume loss.
- Two methods:
- Method A - non-rotating test piece (widely used).
- Method B - rotating test piece (often gives more uniform wear).
- Result reporting:
- Relative volume loss (ΔVrel) referenced to an abrasive sheet calibrated using a standard reference compound.
- Abrasion resistance index (ARI) expressed as the ratio of reference compound volume loss to test sample volume loss (percentage).
- Apparatus and key settings (specified tolerances):
- Drum diameter: 150 mm ± 0.2 mm, length ≈ 500 mm.
- Drum speed: 40 r/min ± 1 r/min.
- Vertical force on specimen: 10 N ± 0.2 N (alternative forces 5 N or 20 N for very soft/hard rubbers).
- Lateral displacement: 4.20 mm ± 0.04 mm per drum revolution.
- Typical abrasion distance: 40 m (84 revolutions); reduced distances allowed for high wear samples.
- Abrasive sheet handling and calibration: preparation, adhesive mounting and calibration against reference compounds are essential to obtain comparable results.
- Quality controls: use of standard or user-defined reference compounds and calibration schedules to ensure repeatability.
Applications and who uses ISO 4649:2017
ISO 4649:2017 is used by:
- Materials and test laboratories performing rubber abrasion testing
- Quality control and specification teams in rubber product manufacturing
- R&D engineers and formulation chemists evaluating compound wear performance
- Procurement and compliance groups requiring standardized abrasion data
Common product areas where abrasion testing informs decisions include tires, belts, seals, hoses, footwear soles and other rubber components exposed to sliding wear.
