In addition to terms used in the three official ISO languages (English, French, Russian) the equivalent ones are given in German. A list of sections and subsections is given followed by the names for items of apparatus. Closely all apparatus are accompanied by a drawing. The vocabulary has an index of the proper names used to identify some of the items and a multilingual index is included.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4791-1:1985 is an international standard developed by ISO, focusing on the vocabulary related to laboratory apparatus made primarily from glass, porcelain, or vitreous silica. This document serves as Part 1 and compiles the names for a wide array of laboratory items, supporting effective communication and identification in scientific environments. The standard supports multilingual reference, providing terms in English, French, Russian, and, by special request, German, along with detailed illustrations for most apparatus to facilitate recognition and correct usage.
The vocabulary aims to assist translators, laboratory professionals, researchers, educators, and equipment suppliers by presenting a harmonized set of names for laboratory glassware, porcelain ware, and silica-based equipment commonly found in analytical, research, and industrial laboratories.
Key Topics
-
Comprehensive Multilingual Terminology ISO 4791-1:1985 provides standardized laboratory vocabulary in the three official ISO languages (English, French, Russian) with additional German equivalents, thus supporting global communication and trade.
-
Extensive Catalog of Apparatus Names Items included cover everything from basic beakers, flasks, and tubes, to specialized parts such as adapters, valves, condensers, and volumetric devices.
-
Segmented by Function and Purpose The standard classifies apparatus according to their principal applications, with subdivisions for general and specialized laboratory uses (e.g., distillation, measurement, extraction).
-
Illustrations to Aid Identification Most entries are accompanied by schematic diagrams to help users visually distinguish between items, avoiding confusion where similar or variant names might be in use.
-
Indexes and Cross-References To enhance usability, the standard features alphabetical indexes and cross-references, both for apparatus names and known proper names used in laboratory practice.
Applications
-
Standardization in Laboratory Procurement Laboratories and purchasing departments rely on ISO 4791-1:1985 to specify and acquire accurate laboratory glassware and porcelain items, avoiding ambiguity in international orders.
-
Translation and Scientific Communication Translators and editors use the vocabulary to ensure consistency when publishing or interpreting scientific works, manuals, and technical documentation in multiple languages.
-
Equipment Manufacturing and Supply Manufacturers of laboratory apparatus benefit from clear terminology for design, labeling, and distribution, ensuring their products meet global expectations and regulatory requirements.
-
Regulatory Compliance and Auditing Laboratory accreditation bodies reference this standard to verify standardized equipment nomenclature in quality and safety audits.
-
Education and Training The standard is a critical resource for educators and students in chemistry, biology, and material science, ensuring proper naming and understanding of essential laboratory equipment.
