Overview
ISO 4995:2014 - Hot-rolled steel sheet of structural quality defines requirements for hot‑rolled steel sheet produced on a wide strip mill for structural applications where specified mechanical properties are required. The standard covers typical grades (HR235, HR275, HR355), common thicknesses (commonly 1.6 mm to 6 mm) and widths (600 mm and over), supplied in coils or cut lengths. It excludes boilers and pressure‑vessel steels, commercial/drawing quality (ISO 3573), re‑rolled cold‑reduced products, and weathering steels.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Grades and chemical composition: Heat analysis limits for C, Mn, Si, P, S and limits/ reporting requirements for additional elements (Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, Nb, V, Ti). Product analysis tolerances are specified.
- Mechanical properties: Minimum yield and tensile strength and elongation requirements are given per grade (see Table 4 of ISO 4995:2014). Tests are performed on samples taken per Clause 7.
- Manufacture and condition: Product normally produced without microalloying elements and supplied in the delivered condition; manufacturers choose steelmaking processes unless otherwise agreed.
- Surface condition and descaling: Hot‑rolled sheet typically has oxide/scale; descaled product (e.g., pickled) and surface effects (including revealed imperfections) are covered. Oiling practice and buyer notification are described.
- Dimensional and shape tolerances: Tolerances reference ISO 16160 (and ISO 13976 for thick coiled material over 6 mm).
- Testing and inspection: Tensile testing in accordance with ISO 6892‑1; sampling, retesting and acceptance rules are defined. Marking, coil size and purchaser information requirements are specified.
- Weldability and application notes: Guidance on weldability (scale removal may be required), and effects of increasing carbon on spot welding.
Applications
ISO 4995:2014 is intended for hot‑rolled steel sheet used in:
- Bolted, riveted, or welded structural assemblies
- General structural components in building and industrial fabrication
- Applications requiring defined mechanical property ranges in sheet form (not plate)
This product is typically used where the sheet is used in the delivered condition and formed/welded into structures.
Who uses this standard
- Steel manufacturers and rolling mills (wide strip mills)
- Steel fabricators and structural engineers specifying material properties
- Procurement and quality inspectors performing acceptance tests
- Welding engineers evaluating weldability and surface preparation
